Replacing Trany Main Shaft Seal

Need to replace Mainshaft seal of 1981 FF trans. Bently says can do without tearing trany apart. What kind of tool will I need to remove seal? Med sized screwdriver and pry? Does not look like a lot of room in there.

Yes, I can see doing that with the trany apart.
How would one pull the seal with the main shaft stll in? (Trany still in one piece).

thats what i was talking about.. my seal puller has 2 different claws, one for big seals, and one for smaller ones.
i imagine you could get the seal puller in there with the trans assembled..

my puller tranny in 1 piece too... it looks like a ruler with a finger/claw on its end.. basicaly tap claw into seal gap.. lift and pops out..

Mainshaft seal? Easier than the pushrod seal! and that one pops out with a stubby flathead!
Two small screws, and a small drill-bit in a drill is all you need.

The bushing should be swapped too.
I remove the end cap and drive a rod ( I think it's 5/16") through the pushrod hole, drive them both out the clutch.
You might be able to thread a tap into the bushing and pull both out the clutch side without removing the end cover, I haven't tried that yet.

Add a steady hand to the screws and drill bit. Broke VW still up? Yep it sure is!

I've got 400000km on my transmission and I have it out of the car.
Should I change it or leave it as is, presently not leaking?

Do you really want to take it out again when it starts to leak? You won't know it is leaking until it soaks your clutch in gear oil. Probably the reason you have your trans out? Clutch job? You'll need a new disk if you get oil on it.
Its worth the couple bucks to do it now
