there was a fair number of them up here, but that was a LOT of years ago. Haven't seen one in years. I had a pickup that vintage with the 4 cylinder gas engine (8 sparkplugs!), knew of 2 diesels. Bodies didn't stand up to salt in the north. ASAIK the diesels were pretty decent, ran for big miles.
Lots of them out here on the West coast of Canada. A friend of mine is really into them. The early ones were the SD22, all iron, overhead valve, 3 bearing crank. I've heard they were a copy of the Volvo marine diesels. Later they came out with the SD25, basically the same, but 2.5 litre instead of 2.2, and with a five bearing crank. There is also a 6 cylinder marine version.
There is one of them in the junkyard right now, here in the area of San Diego county, California where I live. They did indeed make these and the SD series engines I believe were also found in a variety of other things like boats and forklifts. Nissan/Datsun was/is actually known for their diesel engines and in some countries Nissan offers everything from small diesel powered microcars up to full size semi tractors.

Indeed there was, and yes you have.
