« on: July 24, 2011, 02:22:48 am »
while fueling up today , a black Datsun pulled up in line for the diesel pump...after I pointed out the empty gas pumps , and the woman driving it told me it was a diesel ,,,,, well ,I've never seen a Datsun diesel pickup before .. she is the second owner ././ they Love their Datsun but finding parts is a little sketchy, they are fairly rare .. there was a fair number of them up here, but that was a LOT of years ago. Haven't seen one in years. I had a pickup that vintage with the 4 cylinder gas engine (8 sparkplugs!), knew of 2 diesels. Bodies didn't stand up to salt in the north. AFAIK the diesels were pretty decent, ran for big miles.

Lots of them out here on the West coast of Canada. A friend of mine is really into them. The early ones were the SD22, all iron, overhead valve, 3 bearing crank. I've heard they were a copy of the Volvo marine diesels. Later they came out with the SD25, basically the same, but 2.5 litre instead of 2.2, and with a five bearing crank. There is also a 6 cylinder marine version.

the 8 spark plugs were for 2 independant ignition systems.. they fired at different times. and most that ive seen, wont run right after a while.

datsun was the first compact diesel pickup to pass us emissions standards.. they were the first ones in america, and there for, sold considerably better than the toyota diesels of the same era. the nissan engines are also much better than the toyota engines..

it kinda seems like the datsuns are the easiest to find small diesel pickup..

i own one, but it needs a trans. runs awesome tho, just needs some valve seals..

they were NOT a copy of the volvo penta, or the chrystler M433, but rather both companies bought engines from nissan and marinized them..

the SD33 was also used in marine apps with and without turbo..

i believe they came out with the

There is one of them in the junkyard right now, here in the area of San Diego county, California where I live.

They did indeed make these and the SD series engines I believe were also found in a variety of other things like boats and forklifts.

Nissan/Datsun was/is actually known for their diesel engines and in some countries Nissan offers everything from small diesel powered microcars up to full size semi tractors.

They won't sell cars whole.

Unless you just wanted something small off it, I may be persuaded to go get it if it's there.

yup, the nissan diesels are really strong runners!  we have one powering our Hitachi EX60 excavator!!  8000 plus hours and still running perfectly!!  of course the specs are a little different from vehicle applications tho, but still essentially the same engine.

Had to laugh at that..........
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.
