1.6 Flywheel
« on: July 14, 2011, 11:31:32 am »
how heavy is the OEM flywheel?

Is there a cheap light weight replacement or should I just send this off the the machine shop for a diet?

gasser flywheel is lighter than a diesel wheel, use that.. but be sure to use one that has a TDC mark, or mark it for TDC.

lightened flywheel is too light.. they take a gasser flywheel (witch is already way lighter than the diesel flywheel, and lighten it some more)
92 Jetta GLI - Black, 1.6D w/ GT2056V turbo..
86 GTI - 4 Door, Med Twilight Gray, Tow Machine..
86 Audi Coupe GT - Tornado Red, All Stock.. WRECKED.
89 Toyota 4Runner - Dark Grey Metallic, LIFTED!

Turbo: exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster.

theres already enough info for the OP right there..

its more just some bickering, and personal preferences in that other thread..

So just use an 8V flywheel then? I'll see if I can find one, otherwise, I can just take a few lbs off this one.

I'm going to waterfest this weekend, so maybe I'll find some stuff.

what clutch/flywheel do you have right now? if you can get a clutch, flywheel, and pressure plate off a 1.8 8v engine, then it will be an upgraded clutch, and a lighter flywheel.. even better than that would be 16v pressure plate.. better holding power.

8v or 16v 210mm flywheel
8v or 16v 210mm pressure plate
8v 210mm clutch disk..

Thanks man, that clears things up. I'll see what I can find at the swap meet.

just be sure that whatever flywheel you get, has 9 holes around the edge, to bolt it to the pressure plate..

I'll keep that in mind.

Should I assume that a 210mm are not all the same? I am not sure why some would have 9 holes and others less.

no, only the 210mm wheels got 9 bolt holes.. all the others have 6 bolt holes (200mm and 190mm)

I read through it and noted that the 1,6 is a 200mm flywheel, I assume as long as you change the pressure plate and clutch, the 210mm will bolt up and work fine?

No problema sir. I ordered the 210mm kit from bfi with the lw fw, bolted right up. Make sure you get new pp and fw bolts as well. I got those from gap. They have a kit that comes with the bolts and the throw out bearing and cover.

to upgrade, to 210mm setup, you need to change (atleast) the clutch disk, flywheel, pressure plate. thats at a bare minimum..

what i did, was pulled the brand new clutch off my 1.8 gasser, and bolted the whole setup on my diesel. then i lost my timing mark, and had to make a new one..

if you get a used setup, then try and get it off a late mk1 1.8, or an early mk2 1.8, they have timing marks on them.

200mm parts and 210mm parts are in no way interchangeable..
