1.6TD vs 1.9TD rpm's?
« on: January 20, 2006, 06:59:49 pm »
Finally getting on track with my 1.9TD,
Wingman will be taking care of me.
I have seen numerous comments here about 1.9's not
being rev happy like the 1.6's.
However on my local Quebec site ( VWQebec ) I have not
come across this comment.
What's the situation on this, please set me straight!
Hope I have chosen the right motor, have big plans for it!
Thanks in advance,
Hugh

The 1.9's do not like to rev like the 1.6's do. I can verify this as I have modified a bunch of both. There are several reasons the 1.9 doesn not rev:
1: crank is 2lbs heavier than the 1.6 crank, and that 2 lbs is on the very end of the counterweights so the reciprocating mass is signifigantly more.
2: The rod caps weigh double of what the 1.6 ones weigh.
3: The 1.9 crank has a longer stroke than the 1.6 crank.
4: The 1.9 flywheel is heavier.
5: The tiny turbo on the 1.9 runs out of breath really quick.
6: The 1.9 lda boost pin has little taper and thus creates very little additional fuel when compared to a 1.6 version.

There are other things too that I am forgetting.

all of those things sound like they can be changed/upgraded on the 1.9, if you were to lighten the 1.9 internals, how much power do you think there is to be gained and what would the costs be?

Thanks for the clear reply!
I have a K-24 that I will be rebuilding soon with the intention
of installing on the 1.9TD.
I was also planning on some Smog GTD injectors and pump mods.
935Racer I also see you have a high perforomance cam advertised on your PassengerPerf. website.
Would this be worthwhile combined with a big downpipe plus
the other mods I mentioned?
I will not be playing around with the core other than the TDI
pully mod, heavy duty head studs and a better clutch.
Thanks for the help!
Hugh

I don't think there is too much to be gained from lightening the bottom end of the 1.9 until someone can solve the high rpm fueling issue. I can't get a diesel to smoke after I flow a head, which is nice as far as no smoke go's but lame as far as I know if I could get more fuel there would be soo much more power.

What could I expect performance wise with the following mods I intend to do before the swap?

Gilles performance pump rebuild
Smog's injectors
Large downpipe / exhaust with K24 turbo
Passenger perormance ported head
Intercooler
( and of course better clutch, head studs, TDI crank pully mod )

Thanks!

And what about reliabiliy/duration??
What reinforcement mods to be done in order to sustain all that power?
