2002 tdi. changed turbo-why is it smoking again?
« on: June 16, 2011, 08:45:08 pm »
turbo died w/much smoke.  apparently bearings were gone judging from amount of play.  just replaced it w/used vnt-15 with less than 25000 miles.  changed oil and filter, started it and let it run a minute or so, revved it a little.  started easily, no smoke.  started it last nite and let it run while I fiddled with some things, revved it a couple times-again started and ran ok-no smoke. started it tonite to drive it home.  went down driveway and up hill on paved road and when I looked in mirror it was smoking blue smoke.  drove down the road a mile and turned around and came back and parked it.   smoking all the while. definite odor of burning oil.  noticed oil dripping from one of the tail pipes from the muffler.  when I headed homeward, noticed a visible oil trail on the paved road until I topped the hill.  Is this normal from oil left in the tail pipe/muffler?  or did I blow a seal or something?  I'm going to let it set for the weekend as I have other things to do, but I'm looking for hope and ideas other than tearing the turbo off again.  On a related note, how difficult is it to rebuild a turbo?  I have the old one and thought about doing that for a spare(and now it may be a necessity)

It takes a while to burn oil out of the exhaust system.
Keep an eye on the oil level in the engine to determine if the new/used turbo is bad.

Yeah, my friend holed a piston in her Subie, and I changed the engine.
Leftover oil in the exhaust was so bad I didn't see anything but black behind me for 8 miles, and it smoked badly at least another 20.

my fav was a 1.8t... blew the shaft apart.. filled exhaust with oil...

step on that bad boy and you could not see the trucks/cars behind you once i switched the turbo... got off interstate exit.. in a cloud of smoke.. and it covered the gasstation like some fright night horror movie.. was great,... took a good 50 miles..

Good advice. As far as the turbo goes, if the smoking doesn't clear up, a vnt is rebuildable but sourcing the parts is very difficult and they are not oem.
