AHU advice
« on: May 15, 2011, 01:58:41 pm »
I know I want a GTB Turbo....
I m just not sure what one...
Maybe you guys can help me decide.

 GTB1752V 775159-0001
 Model : Renault Master Traffic
 2.5Dci
The housing will fit my application and it already is vaccum actuator.
Not sure the size of the wheels, the A/R or trim... Might be good for my 1.9 AHU TDI.

GTB1756VK which needs to be converted and the compressor housing needs to be cut and welded.

GTB2056VL from the volvo. It s a great housing for my project, water cooled...

All are similar priced.

What is a big factor is.....:
When and how much boost will I get from
 each turbo on my engine.
:What will my EGTs be for each turbo..
:Longevity. At what boost will I have to run to reach my goal and how long will that turbo last at that boost.

A bit of background.. 1998 AHU TDI.
Head has been gasket matched and polished.( took a lot of meat out of the exhaust ports)
fresh rings and bearings and guides and valve job.
stock 10 mm pump
tune/EGR delete ect...
.216 noozles (VEG)
2 1/4" mandrel exhaust front to back, no muffler etc.
AAZ intake and exhaust manifold

It s in a 95 sidekick with toyota axles, dual T cases and 35" BFG KM`2s
weights 3400lbs. Currently has a 95 AAZ with K14 turbo in it.
Just not enough HP to cruise down the highway at 120kph
Works well offroad but the boost (15-17psi) is  a little slow to kit in.
Govenor mod, boost pin ground, fuel turned up.

Thats why the upgrade to the AHU TDI...

22psi boost ish?? depending on turbo. ?
Will the stock AAZ intake manifold work in regards to flow??
What are the exact wheel specs, A/R, trim of all the above turbos.
and how will they work in my application...

I would like 180BHP (140-150WHP) ish
Low EGT temp at 120kph (2500rpm)
as fast as I can get for spool up and boost at low RPMS.

Any advice or real world applications as I can get would be appreciated.

Derek

You should be in luck with your quick spool time goals with the stock turbo. However BHP is not really a regarded number when speaking of Diesels. Power only equals Force times Distance over Time. FORCE is the real number that matters, or Torque.

The stock AAZ, puts out 107ft.lbs of torque.
The stock AHU? 150ft.lbs of torque.

But you've already got a ported head, .216 nozzles, a tune.. 22psi is higher than needed. You are going to run an intercooler yes?

The stock turbo will be fully spooled at 1850-1900 rpms. A bigger turbo, will add time to that spool.

Sounds like you have a good one.  I have a Samurai with a AHU TDI, Giles injection pump, stock injectors and a K03/04 hybrid turbo.  I'm running Toyota axles and W56 transmission.  33" tires, 3200 lbs curb weight and pull 75 miles per hour up the hill (average 30 mpg).  I too would like a larger turbo down the road.  I did just add water injection (a week ago) and noticed when the water is injected, the turbo spools up extreamely fast.  I'm very happy with the set up (AEM).  EGT's haven't come down too much but I'm at 1,100 max (pre turbo).  Go with a larger turbo and add water injection for a faster spool.  Good luck.

^ That s a pretty heavy sami you have there.
You runing MTs on it as well?

I used to run 33MTRs and it worked pretty well all round. It s just since I ve gone to the 35 BFG that I ve been having issues...
Bigger tire , bigger turbo. Never ending I guess!

The AAZ I have in it now has the govenor mod , fuel screw turned up a bit and I put more ramp on the boost pin. The stock on was a  joke.
I went from the K03 that cam on it which was immediate spool but high EGTs and was to restrictive at higher RPM. Didn`t liek the highway at all.
Then I went to the K14, A little bit slower spool but was a bit better on the highway.
However it isn`t good enough.
Thats why I bought an AHU and started to collect parts.
The last part I need is the Turbo.
I want VNT. GTB seems to be the best for similar money as other turbos.
Which GTB is the question....
Maybe someone has had experience with them to comment?

ft/lbs gets the bucket rolling well
HP keeps it moving at high speeds

I d never complain about torque from a diesel.
It s the HP I m lacking in higher RPM range.

Well the tires are 33's BFG mudterrain.  I have heavy bumpers, armor on the axles and a winch.  Quick question if you know. I am running the VW alt, but want the power steering pump on the passenger side of the engine.  Where did you put your p/s pump?

I used a 130amp alternator from a ford taurus and put it on the pass side and used a chevy saginaw pump and put it on the drivers side. I did the mod to the pump and now have lot so pressure and volume to turn the tires. I m also using a toy IFS steering box.
