tdi newby. dead turbo? white smoke? plus auto trans issues.

got 2002 jetta tdi from my brother with about 180,000 miles.  It has auto(and I know about the issues, but he's my brother and the price was great).  He bought it from a guy who didn't want to replace the tranny.  my brother drove it last summer for couple thousand miles and tranny worked ok.  it set till I got it a couple weeks ago.  I put a tank of fuel thru it, driving easily to save the tranny.  last weekend, I suddenly notice clouds of white smoke behind me.  I pulled over and popped the hood but couldn't find anything obvious.  I drove another couple miles and the smoke quit.  I let it set and drove it into town and noticed that the turbo wouldn't kick in and shifting became more iffy into 4th.  On the way home, couldn't get into 4th or rev more than 3000 rpm.  smoking of course so I parked it.  checked under hood when I started it later, and a little smoke coming from something, and smoke out the exhaust.  No obvious things noticed ie noise, hoses off, sudden breakage.  I have no experience w/turbos so I'm looking for suggestions as to what to check out.  Woud my babying the car have cause the turbo to clog and fail?  all help appreciated.

it might cause it to get clogged, but not after such little time of driving i wouldn't think.

The intake is clogged clean it and it will work alot better, my parents TDI wouldn`t rev pass 2500RPM till I cleaned the intake.

finally hauled it home, and checked fluids.  oil below dipstick.  antifreeze gone from reservoir.  still starts easily(I had to drive it onto dolly to bring it home) and smokes profusely.
