Non-Turbo Diesel Cam Specs

Anybody know the lift and duration of an NA 1.6 diesel cam versus the turbo cam?

TIA, Stan

All VW Diesels, 1.5, 1.6, naturally aspirated and turbo, up through '85 used the same camshaft.  The camshaft changed in '86 when the engine switched to hydraulic head.

As for the specs - I posted some (solid lifter diesel cam) specs on the old forum on the long-runner intake manifold thread.

There is I think a cam linear travel vs rotation angle plot in the 1.5lNA SAE paper I have hardcopy of in storage that I could scan and post if needbe when I get some free time.

Thanks Jake! :D

I'll go look at that old thread, Jake, but you might just stick those specs on you website.

Edit: Here is what you wrote.

Quote
Below are the 1.6lD / TD camshaft specifications, from the 1.6lTD SAE paper. I hope this information does the trick for calculating the optimal intake manifold runner length:

"The intake valve has a maximum valve lift of 8 mm. Intake opening is at 5 degrees aTDC and intake closing at 14 degrees aBDC where both timings are rated at 1 mm of camlift. The maximum valve lift of the exhaust valve is 9mm, with opening and closing at 27 degrees bBDC and ~ degrees bTDC respectively. Intake valve clearance is 0.2 to 0.3 mm, and exhaust valve clearance is 0.4 to 0.5 mm. All these geometrical dimensions are identical with that of the 4-cylinder naturally aspirated Diesel engine."

If more information is necessary, I might also have a plot of the cam displacement vs rotational angle as well (IIRC, such a plot exists in the original 1.5l VW Diesel SAE paper.)

I hope you don't use that web site too much!  I haven't updated that thing for years...  It is very outdated.  Hard to start updating it now too, as I don't have any additional server storage space left I don't think.

Jake, if you scan that paper and email it to me I can post it on my website (which I just use for hosting thread pics anyway), and then we can link to it within a thread here. Or post it here if Marc (RedRotors) gets us some image space (may already be there).

I should scan that in.  I'm sure it would be useful to a lot of folks!  :)  I'll try and do it when I can.  PS - I've got other VW Diesel SAE papers in hardcopy, as well... ;)  I spent quite a bit of time at my school's engineering library several years ago collecting them.  These 2 are by far the most useful for our purposes though.

Yeah, it would be great to have access to both papers. :)

BTW, anybody know if the 1.9TD has the same cam specs as the 1.6TD?

Looks like the 1.9lTD has a unique camshaft from all the other motors.

So to recap - looks like there are 3 camshafts for the 4-cyl IDI Diesels: the solid lifter camshaft (found on 1.5's and 1.6's with solid lifters), the 1.6 hydraulic cam, and the 1.9lTD cam.

Does the 1.9lTD cam have more lift and duration? And can one be retrofitted advantagously to a 1.6lTD?

I think the 1.9TD cam actually has less lift (at least on the exhaust lobe) and similar duration to the 1.6TD cam. This is based on my own and SpikeTD's measurements of the 1.9TD cam and the information provided in the 1.6TD tech paper. I'm in the process of aquiring a "well used" 1.6TD engine so I'll soon be able to confirm this. If the 1.6TD cam looks better for performance I'll likely give it a try.

The TDI cam, which will also fit in all 4cyl vw diesel heads has even less lift and duration than the 1.9TD cam. I presume this is better suited to the TDI's powerband.

Yep.  Thanks for the web space offer... I will probably want more than just to put up the SAE paper as JPEGs.  Text doesn't work too well as JPEG anyway.  I will let you guys know if I need it after I get it scanned it.  Too bad this $50/month broadband connection I am paying good money for doesn't come with more web space of it's own!   :(
