Here is the story, i have an engine put together by someone else i bought as a box of parts some assembly required. I pulled the head from the block and found a gouge in the #4 cylinder, initially i thought broken ring but after further disassembly found the cause wrist pin was riding against the wall. The guoge is maybe 3/32 wide and probably .015 deep he ran it this way for somewhere between 1 and 5k miles. Its not a diesel(1.8t) but you guys seem to have much more nuts and bolts get your hands dirty experience than anywhere else i can think to ask this question and the principle is same diesel or gas. Will it noticeably burn oil and will compression suffer tremendously if i were to put back together as is?(i have never knowingly put one back together with an issue) Its already one oversize and i'm not putting the $$ into it to buy pistons if its really bad i'll maybe sleeve it or find a good used block. Any other suggestion for a course of action? Thanks in advance
i think i would start looking for a new block, since you dont wanna do any machine work..
is the gouge bad enough that you can catch your finger nail?
yea, theres like a 99.9 percent chance it will burn oil, and have lower than normal compression on that cylinder..
Yep it most definitely catch's my finger nail and i can feel it go deeper then come back up! Too bad something so easy messed up the whole thing!

then its gonna make things go funky if you close your eyes and pretend you never saw the gouge..
i would find a new block, or bore that one hole and put a 2nd o/s piston in there..
i have a 1.5 diesel vw engine, it has 3 standard size cylinders, and one o/s cylinder.. lol.
Hey now, with the 3 std and 1 over, Did you notice any weird issues from dissimilar volume/compression or is it not enough to make much difference? Now where to find one second over piston

the over size cylinder would miss when cold when i first built the engine.. there was a SLIGHT gouge in that cylinder from a broken piston and a valve head bouncing around in the engine..
after i got some miles on it, it missed less when cold.. but it always ran super good once it was warm.. it was in my 81 rabbit for a long time, i beat on that motor pretty hard..

1.6D sleeves are the wrong bore size.. AAZ or ABA sleeve might work tho.
My rabbit had pitting on one cylinder wall when I got it, I ran it like that for 5000 miles and then reringed it. Of course it didn't fix the pitting but it ran fine and didn't burn oil at all.
Now almost 65,000 miles later I think it's starting to burn oil a little bit.......unless the leaks have gotten bad enough to show consumption

I couldn't really feel the pits though. I think in your case where youcan catch a fingernail I think you'll definitely burn oil and have less compression.
