swap 1.6l idi for 1.9l td?
« on: March 26, 2011, 06:57:17 pm »
Hi I am new to the game of diesels and I have a 1980 rabbit 1.6l idi I think it is toast. I had an offer from a friend for his 1.9l td out of his 1998/97 not sure on it because it looks like a td not a tdi. any ways I want to swap engines and it looks like I will be able to mount it but the wiring is another question one guy said you can just hook it up to my old fuse box and wires and it will work fine now another guy said I have to take the fuse box and wires from the 1.9 and put that in to my mk1 what do you suggest? my buddy said it has a obd2 sensor or something like that not sure if it is even really that important for me to hook up. I have so many questions I don't want to annoy any one but I don't want to mess up a perfectly good engine either. hope you can help thank you.

Per my PM your motor mounts will be one of the big differences.  Here's a great thread with some good pictures on some of the mods needed when dropping a more recent diesel onto the MK1 chassis:

short answer, very do able. Not sure on the CEL fuse box issues, but if the 1.9 is pre 98 you should be good to go. As Vince says engine mounts will be the main headache.

Well from what I understand you take a passenger side gas mk1 mount and you cut half of it off and hook it up to the side.

VW's of the early 90's have a CEL2 type of fusebox. You have a CEL1 fusebox. A few people swap in the CEL2 box as an upgrade. Being an IDI diesel you only need to worry about the glow plugs and stop solenoid getting powered.

I know most 020 series of trannies should fit. If you look around and search I am sure you will find posts of said swaps and trannies used.
