TD Engine Problem
« on: March 24, 2011, 06:39:00 pm »
This has happened twice now and I can't figure out why. It seems that if I stall my car it won't start again. First time this happened was in a parking lot of a gas station. I went to back out clutched like a girl and stalled it. I went to start it again and it was like tryin to cold start it, it turned over ok but wasn't even trying to start. I tried for a 1/2 hour to start it before I decided there was enough parking lot and I'm big enough to get it moving fast enough to hop in it and try pop starting it. So that's what I did, and it worked... started right up.

Today nearly the same thing, only I couldn't push it, had to tow behind a truck to pop it. Once runnin it's fine again. I cannot understand what could be happening and why it won't start after a stall like this. The car regularly starts ok, unless really cold. I installed new glow plugs a month ago, if that, new oil and filter, I always mix marvel in with the fuel and a touch of anti-gel. Any ideas?

I would guess either GP or starter. What brand GP did you use when you replaced them? I haven't had good luck with any but bosch.
Starter is a tricky thing. Burn your money has an entire write up in the FAQ on drop voltage testing. Check it out.

I've had this problem with a rabbit pickup. Turned out to be a bad connection with the ignition switch plug.
It would crank and not even try to fire but started when I let off the key.....
Good luck with the diagnosis.

I have had this on a few beetle ignition keys, I get the feeling vw used the same key switch on beetles and golfs and you would spin it over and it wouldnt fire and then sometimes you let the key flick back and it would start. The diesel obviously isnt going to be able to spin over as quick or carry on going like a gas engine so wont start so easy.

ANother thing could be the 12v to the stop selinoid. If there are breaks in the wire that could cause intermittant starting. I would still guess starter. I had a flat red rabbit that was that way and I went through 2 "good" starters that worked on other cars and had them rebuilt. Then I went to advanced auto and got a new one and I didn't have starting issues since.

The GP are bosch. I read enough on them to not put anything else in it.

I can try another starter and see if it helps. I don't think it turns over as fast as it should sometimes, even with a new battery with 950cca. I'll check the wiring first though. I have the oil light/buzzer issue happening too and sometimes on startup tach doesn't want to work. Car sat for a year before I bought it, and I don't think the PO did any maintenance to it... I should have known what I was inheriting.

Thanks for the replies, I appreciate it, I wasn't sure where to start with it.
