Whole left rear strut tower came off the fender, made a heck of a bang. Time to move on...
Got another one here (gasser) that was supposed to get dieseled and then put on the road. I think I'll getr it safetied and try to get it through emissions as a gasser for the time being.
'92 Jetta gas with 5 speed, about 220,000 kms. Any hints on getting it through emissions if it gives me trouble?

heavier oil, tune up right before you take it in, and before going through all the grief, run it as is and do a visual. If it smokes like a 1931 coal fired factory, it'll need a crap load of work to get a pass.

Thanks, doesn't seem to smoke much. It will get a diesel (eventually) either way, but I haven't got time right now if it will pass as a gasser.

-change the fuel filter and drain the tank to get any old crap gas/sediment out of the system
-do a few highway runs on fresh gas and run a gear too low at speed to clear out some of the crap the old fashioned way
-running diesel oil will quell some of the smoke.
-the fresh tune up will help a bit, can't say it will pass
-about 2 days before the oil change run some sea foam in the oil and in the gas tank.
these will help get the emissions lowered, but odds are you might need a new cat to pass.

That's what I'm afraid off, don't want to invest a bunch of money in a gas system that's coming out....
If it doesn't pass there will be a mad dash to get the diesel in over a weekend!

Put some methyl hydrate in the fuel tank (about 4 litres or a bit less) in the tank and run it for a while. Best if you could get 100 km or so on it. OK to leave it in for the ETest. Note that this only helps if the engine is not burning oil. If your cat is just slightly deteriorated it can help. Make sure the fuel tank is full and the cap holds pressure.

Turns out the garage doesn't want to work on anything that old, so......
Doing it myself (all) this weekend.
Pulled the AAZ diesel and trans (.394 final .75 od, 90mm) out of the broken car yesterday. about 3 hours, had to quit for the day due to previous commitments. Got the car out of the garage and car#2 in last night.
Pulled the gas engine(1.

and trans (.367 final but low od, 100mm) out this morning. Wanted to put the .71 final in that trans, and a T3 on the engine, but I think those goodys will have to wait for the engine that's 1/2 built on the engine stand. Want the car on the road yesterday. Just on a lunch break right now..... Found a whole lot of extra wires I think I'll be eliminating after the fact, most of which are for the air conditioner.
SHOULD have it running tonight, still need to go through struts/brakes etc. Going to have a new exhaust made.

Besides what's been mentioned, the old trick I know about is to get your catalytic converter hot, real hot, before the test but I don't know if Canada models have cats that year. On the way to the test, drive in a lower gear (higher rpm) than usual to get it all real warm. Make sure the engine is fully warmed and that the cat converter is warm too, don't let them test it after an hour sitting in the cold.

The car came with a cat, don't need it with the AAZ.
Engine/trans is in, bolted down. Most of the wiring is done. Rad is in, not sure what to do with teh mass of wires going to the fan/fanstat (Air conditioned car, getting deleted). THe other car (non air) ran everything with 2 wires, red (live?) and brown (ground?).
Anyone got a simple diagram of how this is supposed to be wired? 2 speed fan/fanstat.
Also need to figure out which line from the back feeds fuel, and which one is return. I'm assuming there's a pump back there somewhere I need to eliminate too....

Car is now on the road, safetied and e-tested. I'll snap another picture or two today. Anyone need an 8 valve '92 gas engine? 220,000 kms. Cheap!
