New Diesel "Superbike"
« on: August 12, 2005, 10:50:32 am »
I don't know when or if we'll see them for sale here in North America, but if they come I may just have to buy one!

It appears to be based on the 3-cyl VW TDI engine found in the European Lupo, which is slightly smaller than the Golfs VW sells here in NA.

You can read all about it on the following link. And BTW, if you like to read about exciting developments in consumer goods be forewarned...this site can be seriously addicitve!

TDI bike  8)

Quote

“The bike uses a turbo charged, direct injection engine, with intercooler. It produces at the moment approximately 70 bhp and 160 Nm (118 ft pound) of torque. We will increase the power and torque later this year to more than 100 bhp and between 200 to 250 Nm of torque.

Now 200 Nm of torque is indeed an outrageous amount of torque for a motorcycle to produce. If it produces more than 200, which seems likely, it will out-torque the fattest bottom-end in two-wheeled history – cos that’s what Triumph’s Rocket III produces.

And the engine produces that from about 1800 till 3000rpm, that means wheelys in every gear

Yeah...think of it. A TDI Golf makes up to 155 lbs-ft (210 Nm) of torque and weighs about 1500 kg.

That or more in a 300 kg motorbike...?

And 2.5l/100km fuel economy (100 miles per US gal.)? Holy cow!  :!:

Not exactly 'Superbike' material, but it looks like the KLR650-based bike might finally happen:

Check out the D650A1.

I'm not much of a sport bike guy but I could make an exception for the Star Twin bike...

I'd almost part with my left, err...balljoint to have one of each of these

I love the Enfields- if I ever get a bike, it will be a Bullet.
http://www.enfieldmotorcycles.com/

They arent that expensive either, and from what I've read, they are quite reliable and a blast to ride.  Have not read anything about a diesel version though, but who knows.  If they still make the diesel version in India, I dont see why they couldnt import one.  Heck, the gas version can get 70 mpg!!  Hard to imagine what the diesel could do.

i think enfield doesnt directly make the diesel. a aftermarket company sells a conversion kit which includes a new diesel engine and the associated parts to make it work.

Royal Enfield India did indeed make a diesel powered Bullet w a 350cc fan cooled engine  from a propriatary manufacter , w 18 hp ,,even in India it was cosidered slooow,  but got GREAT mileage ,,, a important factor in India + it could be run on vegy oil ....... Polaris made a 4x4 atv w a Fuji diesel but it was really gutless ,,,,, almost all were sold to a coal mining outfit in the south that used them in their mines !!!!! :)
