Why i love AHU Jettas
« on: February 10, 2011, 07:59:32 pm »
Some of you may have heard me mention that i believe the best car VW ever made was 97-99 TDI Jetta. I have more proof why. I've been looking to buy another and one of my old customers [ a friend actually] asked if i wanted his for $500. He bought it from another customer whose Nissan Torrano Diesel i had converted to to VO and was the original owner. The only real issue with the car was that the odometer had stopped working some 80,000 kms before selling it with 220,000 on the clock-so about 300,000 [ he was traveling about 1500 kms a week] . My pal bought it and put another 150,000 kms when i got it last week. Driving it back from Ottawa i was a little  worried i would be white knuckling back home, but it easily got up to 135 kph with zero boost [ecu went into limp 5 minutes after i got it].
I did a compression test today- all 4 are at 400 psi ! Fixed a couple of lights, unstuck the passenger door,  replaced the vacuum hose from the inlet to the ECU and air filter etc. Now runs great, lots of power. I'm happier than ever.

Tell me the cruise control works and I'll go buy a lottery ticket.

Tell me the cruise control and vacuum door locks work and I'll... nah... never gonna happen.   ;) ;D

The only other thing that doesn't work is that the glove box latch is gone. I won't bother opening it until i have a replacement.
I forgot to mention the exhaust. Everything from the down pipe back was original. Muffler was broken at the weld, so i had to replace it[ $108]. Then i managed to braze where it was rotten at the weld at the rear of the cat. Then i covered the rot along the seam in the center pipe with 2 coke cans and 3 hose clamps.I liked that I had to do every level of repair to the exhaust.
The suspension is all tight. even the license plate lights work.

I replaced the battery in the remote, all central locks and alarm functions working. Coolant bottle is nice and pink.
and yes the cruise works...

Thanks it has airbags

Oh and this car has gone the last 150,000 on VO ,more proof against those who says it's bad for the engine and pump

As a matter of fact between this car, my Transporter and my last 98 AHU , they have clocked 300,000 on VO

yea, but im sure you start up, and shut down on diesel fuel..

or is it 100% veg all the time? do you run 2 tanks or one?

86 GTI - 4 Door, Med Twilight Gray, Tow Machine..

89 Toyota 4Runner - Dark Grey Metallic, LIFTED!

Turbo: exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster.

Two tanks, seperate systems. Car was only switched when completely hot. I agree that a single tank and or VO/Fuel/additive blending may not allowed such a long life.

That what i'm in the process of doing. Have a pal who lives between Montreal and Washington DC. He sees enough of them down there that he thinks he'll find something good for for me.
