AAZ Rebuild
« on: January 07, 2012, 10:55:39 am »
I'm rebuilding my 94 Jetta AAZ to stock specks.  This is the first time I've ever rebuilt an AAZ.
Some part stores are having trouble with this engine, even the vw dealer says it's not a us motor.
Is there a place on here or can anybody help with p/n's?
The engine has 140k miles on it and the pistons, crank and even the head are in great shape.
The parts I need are ,
-piston rings,
-bearings, rod and mains
-complete gasket set
-hydraulic lifter set
-injector tubes that go from the pump to the injectors. These are rusted and cant be trusted
And anything else that would be good to replace while the engine is torn down.
The block and cylinder head are at the machine shop getting cleaned and rebuilt.
The crank is getting the mod done for the TDI pulley as well.
Any help is much appreciated.
Thanks
Tony

How do you wash a pressure washer?
And did you know that the 14th floor in a
hotel is actually the 13th floor!

Welcome Tony!

The dealer is correct, the AAZ was never sold in the US.  You'll be able to find VW part numbers at these sites:  vagcat.com and genuineaudiparts.com.  I buy most of my parts from www.autopartsway.ca.  I checked the US equivalent, www.autopartsway.com, and found that you can buy parts for the AAZ from them.

I would put a clutch pulley on the alternator as running a solid pulley is hard on the crank nose, even if it's modified to the TDI style.  Buy a Bentley manual if you don't have one already.

Going through the same deal. The Mains are the same from a 1.9 to 1.6, The rods are different. There are some gaskets that are different like the oil filter mount to block gasket is different. Also the aaz has that belly oring for the vent. The valve cover and intake gaskets are shaped different, but I think other than that you could get a complete 1.6 engine gasket set and the rest will work.
I have asked and do not know for sure yet, but I am hoping the TDI rings will work for an AAZ.

I would replace the oil pump and intermediate shaft bearings while doing what you have listed.

Early TDI rings are the same, you can use those.

Thanks for the info fellas.  The vagcat site is very cool. I see where the original vw piston rings are very expensive. What about the option on the Japanese rings? The $40 dollar set looks like too much of a risk.
Much appreciated.

I have had good luck with the Goetze brand. I haven't even heard of a bad report from somone using that brand.

If you're going that far, use ARP fasteners on the rods, mains and head.
