The service manual provides one official spec:

"minimum of 2 bar (29psi) at 2000 RPM at normal operating temperature (rad fan has cycled once)"

It can be very high (as in peg a 5 bar / 100 psi gauge) on a cold engine but should drop as the oil warms and thins... ending up at the VW spec for a nice warm engine.

that's similar to my vanagon, which blew the seams from an oil filter this fall-had been in for a while and must have had some irregularity.

mine pegs a 120 psi gauge cold..

dunno how much it runs hot, driving down the road, but i know i have ~37psi @ hot idle..

Turbo: exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster.

i have pretty high oil pressure as well. when the car starts it's peged at 100 (highest my gauge reads) and eventually makes it down to 20 or 30 at idle. when i reach pretty high boost (no boost gauge but the turbo is spinning pretty fast) the oil pressure goes up to about 65 or 80, depending on engine temp, and the oil light in the dash blinks.
