mk3 99 TDI upgrading turbo, few questions
« on: November 15, 2010, 06:31:56 pm »
Im working on swaping a complete TDI engine from a 99 into my mk2 (89) with the tranny also (hydo clutch)

Before I put the motor in, im going to swap out the (really really) small factory turbo with my k24, and run 15psi...
Im wondering if this is safe for the clutch or if its just better insurance to upgrade

Im doing a full TDI swap, full harness, dash, clutch, heater box, fuel tank, and running 2.5in exhaust straight back to a resonator and muffler (all are highflow straight threw design)

also what kind of power would this get me?

thanks

-its about 50% done, just need the weather to be nice to finish

The stock turbo boosts 12-14psi on a good WOT run so I wouldn't think it would be too much worse..

99 TDI, is this still the AHU? or the ALH? Will you be running the stock intercooler? Bigger turbo, you will see your max torque higher in the RPM range (as its slightly bigger/slower spooling) when that full 15psi hits.

Got a build thread going? POST IT UP :)

Good luck on this, I am currently midswap on a 98 TDI in to an 81 Jetta! PM sent.

Intercooler, I want to go with a FMIC (need to collect funds first)

its the AHU (i think), with the waterpump that runs off the ps belt not off the timing belt... not a VNT turbo

its a 1.9L seeing as the k24 was on a 1.6td and it spooled fine, im sure it will be great on the 1.9L...

stock boost is ~15psi?
whats a safe boost level? I would probably only run max 20psi using the k24

might I suggest, using the stock intercooler with a small hood-scoop?

dead serious, save alotta cash.. and you have a very nice usable space right above the transmission to work with.

I was thinking of doing this myself

i think thats the best option, ill have to sort out what kind of scoop to run, and be able to duct it properly...

CAI for the turbo from the pass fender like stock airbox..

I have a MK3 jetta i put the stock t3 turbo from my 86 on it. Had Malone Tuning http://malonetuning.com/ Tune the ecm stg 3 EGR/MAF delete. I have a stock style sachs single mass clutch. His tune is set for 17.5psi I believe stock is the same. The K24 will handle that just fine.

The a3s had a better clutch from factory and can handle more than the stock dual mass setups.

It spools just fine i have some fine tuning to do as i just recieved my Vag-com cable minutes ago. Got 41mpg on its first full tank driving 85mph highway and some aggressive around town driving.

I do however feel i'm going to put a smaller T2 turbo on it for my dad since he drives more in town and rarely "gets on it". The T3 is awesome on the highway.
