I am going to switch from solid rotors to vented rotors on my 1981 vw rabbit. I don't know which vented rotors to get, the plain face ATE or the Premium One ATE. Also, I am going to need new brake pads and was thinking about getting the Performance Friction Carbon Metallic Pads. Has anyone used these pads and would like to comment on them?
I already have the ATE Premium One rotors and Hawk pads on my 1982 Caddy. They don't have the initial bite but are good once they heat up, but still require adequate pedal pressure to ensure an emergency stop. The ATE Premium One rotors are great especially in the rain because they absolutely have that initial bite. I don't know if the plain face rotors will have that?

I have found its really the rubber lines between calipers and the body, and the single piston calipers that are sub-par braking.. also vented or solid will react the same initially, the vented will not dissipate as much over long braking.
Look at some Audi's even.. solid rotor, or even vented yet its huge and has a dual-piston caliper. They don't have trouble stopping. I think you'd be best off with a bigger brake kit, then vented rotors.. as I don't think they will help with the issues you are having.
On my MKII I have 10.1" zimmerman vented/cross drilled rotors. These are mated to hawk HPS pads and a 22mm master cylinder. My impression is very similar to yours in that they don't have that huge initial bite. But they will stop the car VERY quickly if you tell it to...
I absolutely love the setup! I can't comment on pad wear yet but the modulation is great and there is zero noise.

Where do you live? The winter in Chicagoland and the Hawk HPS pads aren't a good mix. The rotors cool off too much. I will be trying Performance Friction pads this winter (soon). They look really good on paper. I switch from 11" G60 rotors to 10.1's in the winter when I switch to the 14" wheels with the Blizzak's. Last year I ran the Hawks, but not this year.
