I got my VNT 15!

Couple questions - for those with a with a vnt
1. the oil return has a banjo fitting - do you just cut this off and get a new fitting to fit the current oil pan (new shorter hose and connection to fit 1.6 oil pan)
2. Same oil line fittings as the 1.6? (just simple flare fitting 45°?)
3. I've read posts, just want to be sure - the can default position as to the vanes (with the can as is) is open?

I would switch over to AN/JIC fittings. The VW fittings are very oddball and you will have a very hard time finding anything aftermarket. Take your pan and turbo and weld or braze AN fittings on there and you can get AN feed and return lines at any online turbo store.

like andrew, i cut the crimp off the drain flange, and cut the top half of a 1.6 line off just below the flex section. then i used a chunk of oil line and 2 hose clamps to keep it together. it has been like that for YEARS now..

If I change to NPT or AN for the pressure line from the oil filter housing, (this means replacing the fittings and at the turbo) do I need to worry about the size of hole in the fitting the original turbo had? I've always thought the oil going to the turbo is metered so the orifice or hole in that fitting is a particular size. Am I out to lunch?

The amount of oil is regulated by the actual bushing/ bearing in the turbo.
The oil return passage is HUGE for a reason, excess oil is forced to the return from the bearings and into the oil pan via gravity.
The factory hard line flows way more oil than the turbo actually needs (this is a good thing).

How are these vnt15's compared to the stock k24's and whatnot? What rpm's do they run the best in and do you just leave the vanes wide open? How much boost do you run them at?

I just bought mine so haven't run it yet, do a search for vnt vanagon, they go over installation and and some people think the vnt 15 is too small, some think just right. I'm only planning on running 20 psi of boost so I think this will be just fine. I have a feeling if you wanted much more than 25 psi, the 17 would be better fitted for that.
