Questions about tiny tach...
« on: October 06, 2010, 04:43:32 am »
1. Has anyone on here ever used one?
2. Would I need the 6mm or 1/4" fitting? (1.6NA)
3. Does anyone even know what I'm referring to?

It fits around an injector line and reads the pulses to convert to RPMs...or something like that.  Seems like a nice solution and simple install.  Thoughts?  I'm already making a custom mount for a set of duostyling gauges, and it looks like this little tach will fit alongside them quite nicely.

There was quite a bit of discussion when they first came out... here's one thread with some pictures:

IIRC the 6mm version fits our lines... if you search thru the threads you should find some discussion on this as well.

I still have mine... in fact it's for sale if anyone's interested.  It's well-designed and functions properly.. in the end I moved in a different direction for my tach needs.

Like all digital gauges it has some lag as the digits refresh so not ideal for shifting purposes...I actually planned to mostly use it as an hour-meter and, as mentioned in the thread above, as a adapter for a timing light.

Thanks.  I read that thread and did find it helpful.  I'm mostly interested in using it to set idle and timing, and just to keep on rpms at different speads/gears, so it sounds like a good option.  Still debating on whether to get an oem diesel tach off ebay or something instead and run it off the w terminal.  I recently had my alternator rebuilt and they added a w terminal, so that is now an option.

Yup... that's exactly where I envisioned using it as well... I like me a smooth idle!!!

So Vince did you ever do the Radio Shack run and make this thing work with a timing light/regular tach. If so put me down for one too.

I want one anyway. If you still have yours Vince let me know in a PM and I will see if I can take it off your hands :D

I've had my tiny-tach for about 3 years now, every now and then it loses it's memory thus losing the time. Also it locks up about every month and I (after calling the manufacture) have to pull the face off and stick a pin in a little hole shorting the internal battery for a split second, that restarts it and then it works for a while longer. I'd like to dig in there sometime and remove the battery, then it would be able to remember any errors and would work everytime I fired my rabbit up.
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

I recently converted a gasser tach for my1.6L ... and am very pleased ... versus the tiny tach you mentioned.  Once I got over the 'newbie' jitters with the process, it was a piece of cake following 4crawler's website.  To replace the big clock taken out, I then came across a console gauge cluster that has the 2 1/16th inch; and am now in the process of installing it.

Only thing now is to decipher the comments issued that the reading of the tach might need adjusting ... which the DSL-1 company (Dakota) provides guide for.

Have a working thread going on here, and hope to get some further detailed input soon.
TIA
