Fresh out of diesel power..
« on: October 01, 2010, 03:34:21 pm »
So, Fueleconomy.gov (run by the EPA and DOE), has listed the top 10 rigs with highest fuel economy from 1984 till now, and surprise surprise, VW hit the list 3 times.. 96-03 TDI cars w/ manual trannies.. (golf, jetta, jettagon) [jetta wagon for those who dont know]

but why only the old first and second generation TDIs? is it because they came with so much smaller cars wrapped around them than the newer TDIs?

92 Jetta GLI - Black, 1.6D w/ GT2056V turbo..
86 GTI - 4 Door, Med Twilight Gray, Tow Machine..
86 Audi Coupe GT - Tornado Red, All Stock.. WRECKED.
89 Toyota 4Runner - Dark Grey Metallic, LIFTED!

Turbo: exhaust gasses go into the turbocharger and spin it, witchcraft happens and you go faster.

Those are with VE pump. PD engines gets better emissions, but mileage is worse.

where is the list? I looked on the site and couldn't find a list put together. Also, the newer TDI info on there website is GROSSLY underated in terms of MPG.

... fueleconomy.gov

I used to use that site a lot back after Hurricane Katrina.

It was one of the tools that swayed me to VW Diesels versus 190 Mercedes Diesels.

Boy am i glad i didn't go with MB.
I NEVER come across 190 Diesels in the boneyards.
And only a couple 190's period.

The estimated MPG on VW Diesel window stickers when new is usually lower than what we get after they have broken in and "relaxed" after a couple few years... or 20.
