Clutch on a 1991 B3 Passat 1.6td
« on: August 13, 2010, 08:55:33 am »
Hi I have a '91 1.6td Passat wagon (SB code) that is going to need the gearbox overhauling, (early 2A cable box). Am I correct in thinking the best/strongest standard clutch that will fit straight in is a VR6 clutch kit.
Is there anything I need to watch out for, or is it just a straight bolt on job?

Thanks

Carl.

IIRC the VR6 kit is completely different. What works well is upgrading to an AAZ 1.9L flywheel and buying a Pressure Plate and friction disc to go with it. It will be a small 24 spline hub and the AAZ is a 210mm setup. Yours is probably a 190 or 200mm setup. If you go that route don't for get to buy the extra M7 flywheel bolts as the 210 unit has 9 and the others have 6.

I *think* you are talking about 020 trannys. If it's a cable shift it's probably a 02A.

Stock can handle a lot of abuse, are you sure you need more then that?

Stinking passat stuff ... you might want to disregard my post. It is accurate if it is the 020. If it is the 02A you might be right as I haven't messed with one of those.

I've been having a looking around the Net for info on 02A gearbox's since I wrote this.
As far as I can see all 02A cable gearbox's have a 228mm clutch.
So its probably quite strong anyway as the same design box would have been used on the later and more powerful AAZ and early TDI engines. I suppose what I was trying to ask was are all 228mm clutch kits the same strength wise. As the gearbox has to come apart anyway I just want to make sure when it goes back together it has a decent clutch that will give a long service life.

228mm Racing Clutch Kit with 3, 4 or 6 puck disk and high clamp load racing pressure plate. For 4 cyl. & VR6 engines with 228mm FW and 02A/02J gearbox. Fits VR6, ABF 16v, G60, & earlier engines with 02A conversion

I lifted that from Bildon Motorsports page. Looks like the VR6 will work fine. In that case I would say that unless planning on some serious power that a factory set would be more than plenty for a 1.6L. If you wanted to check out Bildon, Clutchnet, Zoom, etc. they have some serious stuff. Clutchnet has a factory style with more holding power for a reasonable price too.

Yes, this is what I thought, so in theory all cars with 02A cable boxes should use the same clutch then??
I won't be needing a race clutch as the car is standard at the moment although I do fully intend on adding boost/egt gauges, 2.5 inch downpipe etc, basically all the mods listed on here under the "how to make your 1.6td faster" article.
So because I have to get the gearbox overhauled anyway (it's noisy and the clutch is sticking) I was just looking to get the strongest standard clutch I can. That is why I mentioned the VR6 clutch thinking as this is the engine with the most torque as standard it would be the one to go for. That is if there is any difference between all the others 16v/G60 etc, etc. Maybe its just a one clutch fits all scienario.
Guess I will just take the old clutch to the car parts place and compare it with a new VR6 one and go from there.

If you go here
http://www.clutchnet.com/search.php?mode=search
put in your car and search what is out there you should be pleased. Yellow grade should be plenty for you, or just green is stock upgrade.
