Some Dodge sprinters came with these diesel engine heaters as well.  It's an option but every sprinter I have ever looked at had one.  They're tucked into the driver's wheel well.

I also found a company in Langley B.C. that sells espar heaters at www.cool-it.ca.  They have a small one similar to what I have for $1100.  It's still expensive but would be nice to have if you can't plug in at work for example.

Another thing (not that I'm in an actual COLD part of Canada... hehehe), while it's still warm out pop your door cards off and grease all the linkages to do with your door locks / windows / etc.  My car has a nasty habit of letting some water get in there and then freezing up the driver's door latch.  You can open the door, but then it just bounces open again when you try to close it, the latch won't actually engage.  Serious PITA.
