gearbox noisy at idle until clutch pressed in
« on: August 03, 2010, 05:03:33 pm »
Today i decided to replace my clutch release bearing on the mk2, straight forward enough, changed out the old gear oil and fired her up....... and the horrible knackered bearing sound was still there :-\

ive looked at a few drawings/ diagrams of the gearbox and cant for the life of me work out whats making this rather annoying noise :(

 Any ideas guys and gals?

could it be the springs are getting loose in the clutch disc? When I took my old disc out I couldn't believe how close it was to coming undone. Other than that I don't know. Maybe contact brokevw.com

Yeah, I pulled a good looking clutch out of my car that was about to come apart, too.  It could be the small thrust plate deal that rides in the pressure plate has become loose. Hate to say this but you may want to take it apart for some peace of mind....

X2

Sounds like a broken spring.

Was there any metal flakes in the old oil you drained? Could also be the input shaft bearings. When you pull it out to check the clutch disc springs, spin the imput shaft with a large drill while in neutral to know for sure if its clutch or trans-axle.

I didnt see any metal in the old oil, but theres a magnet inside to catch the bits, so there may be some there somewhere.

i just knew itd be a gearbox off job, i hate doing that  :(

What does it sound like?  Does it change with clutch in or out?

I have never heard of a throwout bearing going bad on one of these as they are bathed in oil...but anything is possible...

just a thought, but if the push-rod in the middle of the input shaft was worn, could that be a possible suspect?

I don't think so....something is shaking in the bellhousing.

if its going to involve stripping the gearbox and rebuilding it then i think ill start looking for another box, i REALLY dont want to be taking the thing to bits at the side of the road again  :(

its bolted down tight to the engine right?

if it is, then i would suspect clustergear bearings..
