what small diesel cars/trucks came with cast iron heads?

I gotta say, I love my 6.5..   Other than some fuel system bugs it's been working great..   And sitting side by side with an Olds 350 gasser not a huge difference dimensionally...


Merc diesel is the way to go..  They're still fairly cheap and plentiful.  ANd parts are cake to find.. The only hangup I've encountered with putting them places other than a Merc is the oil pan configuration..  The sump is towards the front of the engine.

i was worried about the sump. but i guess i can always cut the pan up, and make a new one..

another thing, how easy are the pumps to work with?

and whats the max rpm on these things? not 6k like a vw i imagine?

There is not that much more fuel available with home made mods. Inline pump is not as simple as VE pump. Mynädiesel modify the best Mercedes pumps. 4-valve engines revs high, 6000+ horsepower peak, 2-valve engines a little less.

wait, you can get a 20v 5 cylinder? how hard are those to come by? or did i misunderstand you?

what do they come in? im thinking that the 4v engines were more of a europe thing, or i just never paid much attn to mercedes diesels...

It first came in w124 E-class in ~93 (non turbo) Turbo engines are in w210 E-class and w202 C-class.

they are just too new then. im looking at engines from late 70s/early-mid 80s pretty much, as i dont have a big budget.. and the old stuff is all i can afford.

thats probably all im going to be able to afford. only kinda cars i can easily get my hands on are late 70s to mid 80s 240d's and 300td/sd's

anyone have a measurement on a 617 to see how long they are? i guess i should make sure its gonna fit before i get commited..

I have a headless one sitting in my garage!!!  From the very back where the trans bolts to the tip of the water pump looks to be about 31"  ..   1.25" of that is an aluminum plate bolted to the back of the engine..  Sort of an adapter place I guess you would say...  Those measurements are a hair to the plus side of things, I gotta hoof a head out of the way to get more precise measurements.. When I get some extra hands I can get you something more accurate...
