Front Coils for an '81 Caddy
« on: July 26, 2010, 09:57:25 am »
I've got an '81 Caddy that I'm planning to redo the suspension on soon, and am looking for recommendations  for front coils.

I'm thinking of going with Bilstein HDs up front and KYB Gas-Adjust in the rear, and am looking for a coil that will compliment these and provide a slighter stiffer, more controlled ride over stock.  I'd like to maintain near stock ride height for driving on dirt/crappy roads.  H&R OE Sports looked to fit the bill nicely, but apparently they won't split a set for a regular rabbit (front and rear included) and I don't really want to pay for two extra springs I won't be using.

Soo...Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance.

Part # CC204, 206 or 208, with 204 being the weakest and 208 the hardest. I just posted the links that had the specs on them, a search should find 'em.
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

Where did you post that?  I searched and came up with a couple of your other posts, but no real links.

I was looking at those moog springs you posted up, seems like they have a wide array of load ratings.  I'm thinking of calling Bistein and seeing if they can recommend a spring rate; I'll report back what they say.

People who have used Moog springs or other products, how does quality and durability seem?  I'd like to do this right once, instead of having parts fail on me a year down the road or something.  Thanks for any thoughts and input.

I have moog variable rate rear's on my rabbit and like 'em, the stockers would sit on the bottom with 5 people and some stuff and these don't.

I searched and found the links but they're down for some reason, a few days ago I tried lookin' 'em up from the favorites but they didn't work so I don't know.

I just reread what you wanted and I don't think these are the way to go. These are softer at the top and progressively stiffen as they compress, I think that would mean you'd loose some roll control.

I put those KYB's on the rear of my caddy a month or so ago and they are annoyingly stuff to me, stock height, stock springs.
UNTIL you put 150lbs or so in the rear, then they are nice.  Unloaded though, you'll spill your coffee on yourself trying to match up the cup with your lips from a dip in the road you can't even see till the rear rolls through it.  :)

The fronts are too soft with stock springs and Boge/Sachs gas struts, I bottom them pretty regular.  It's hard to find a happy medium with light vehicles that don't have a lot of suspension travel and very basic suspension setups.
Many things we do naturally become difficult only when we try to make them intellectual subjects. It is possible to know so much about a subject that you become ignorant.

Moog stuff is top shelf merchandise.
But - you may or may not want variable rate springs.
Its a judgement/personal preference call.

If you have a permanent toolbox/workbox or campershell - the KYB Gas-a-justs would be great. Otherwise, maybe not.

Here is what i can offer, the new Monroe Sensa-Tracs are excellent on the front of my 81 Truck under all conditions. Unloaded, loaded, and recently overloaded conditions. Highly recommend them, along with their matching boot/bumpstop kit.

The matching rears would be nice combo if the back half of your truck is naked. Mine has a humongous campershell. And some vintage spring assisted rear shocks.
