I just got this car and the interior is remarkably clean for an 86 and it is white (matches my F350 7.3L), has alloy rims, new tires, new WP and timing belt, and the center section of the back seat folds down so I can store my speargun in there. I am still new to VW diesel and noticed the following about this car; 1) if I intentionally upshift to bog the motor the idle doesn't recover on its own and shakes pretty bad until I rev it and it seems to come back to idle and stay there 2) 1/4 to 3/4 throttle doesn't seem to be much difference and my 85 1.6 NA seemed peppier 3) the turbo has what looks like the wastegate solenoid on the back but the turbo seems to be very quiet. I was thinking about doing the "supertuning with glow plugs" like on the ford IDI forum (use a multimeter with thermocouple capability and hook up leads from each glow plug to see if any cylinder glow plug temp is greatly different than the rest) or I was also thinking that maybe the IP is tired. Also, is there a port on the intake for hooking up a boost guage? The place that did the recent WP and timing belt noted that a bad engine mount was causing the shaking but I am skeptical of that.

Thanks for the input. Is there a preferred rebuilder of these pumps? How do you inspect motor mounts (the bentley manual doesn't seem to mention this)?

Giles is the pump meister of choice, but you will be sans pump for a while. You may be better off picking up a good used and send it off at your liesure.
