perhaps this should be in the faq, but I am curious as I am rebuilding my 1.5. Is is necessary to ream the holes in the head-gasket to the actual size of the ones in the block? Yeah I know, I should be banned for asking, but I just have to know if this is necessary, I worry about stuff like this.
thanks,
Kevin
They are designed like that to control the rate of coolant flow.
As 745 turbogreasel said, it's to control the coolant flow. There's a flow rate where heat can be transfered efficiently from our (sometimes very) hot cilinders to the coolant. If it flows faster, it may not absorb that much heat.
By the way, there's no thing such as a "stupid question".
No such thang as stupid questions. I didn't know why they were different sizes. Always good learning here.
I remember an instructor in the Navy telling me many years ago that the only stupid question is the one you don't ask, and that has stuck with me for 20 some years.
