It seems to me that if I drive my 91 TD Jetta more on the hard side it seems to run a lot better than if I just run it easy to try and squeek out mpg. Anyone else notice this? When I drive it more aggresivly and wind out the gears it just seems to run better, smoother idle, crisper throttle responce. Not like it really effects my mpg, seems that when I do run it hard my mpg is 47 or so and if I baby it I get 51mpg. So that is a little bit of economy but not really that much. Just was wondering if anyone noticed a difference or is it just in my head. :shock:
Driving it harder keeps the engineinternals and the oil cleaner (less deposits/watercondensation) so it will run/idle smoother.
I recall a client of the Mercedes dealership I worked for, I only did a small-service on the MB E 250 turbodiesel and kicked the cars ass on the highway at operation temperature. The clients was puzzled why the car ran so much better after just a small-service...
after highway-driving or slow driving around the city i will usually pull to redline in a couple gears to burn off deposits. then drive it soft again for a few minutes to let the turbo cool down before i shut off the motor. seems to work well.
I dunno, but my 1.9 IDI seemed to like running at 4500RPM all day long
Well, my pickup got 26mpg on the last road trip, running all day at 3,000rpm/65-70mph (redline is 4,000 on this). Around town, it only gets about 22. Maybe it does like running WOT better even if rpm is higher.
On the other hand, my friend's '99 TDI jetta gets better mileage if we take it easy (which means going 70 instead of 90) on road trips.

Sense you said pickup I'm assuming it is the caddy which did not come with all the electronics as the newer ones like the '99 this could be why you can run the '99 at lower rpms the computer keeps everything in line for you... I know myself my inspection ran out and I drove the car for something like 3 months making shur not to go over the speed limit and full stopping at stop signs as a result it worked really bad... Then got the inspection done drove the crap out of it and everything was fine again..

Nope -- its the Mitsubishi pickup in my signature. It is a completely mechanical diesel, like the VW caddy, so your comments on that still apply though,
