Fan cooled intercooler
« on: May 01, 2010, 05:24:14 pm »
In my VW pickup I'd like to put the intercooler "hidden" and there's a pretty big space in front of the engine, on top of the gearbox, that would be a good place to put it. The idea was to mount a marine compartment ventilator to push the air. The capacity is 2.8 m3/min. power consumption 55 W (6 A fuse).
Would it be enough?

This is the one I'm talking about.

For capacities you could compare with radiator fan ones for a first guess, I don't know myself. Appart this :

Ideally you would like the intercooler within the duct - right ?

This thing seems ideal to catch fresh air at the front of the car but it seems far from optimal to have it so concentrated at the blowing end. Looks like you're missing some diffuser to have the air dispersed through the whole surface of the intercooler. Do you plan to build one ?

Note : how many people - do you think - ever wanted to have that empty space filled with some intercooling device? VW engineers themselves ...

Look at the stock GTD intercooler setup. It's basically exactly what you are describing without the fans though

It's not that I just want to fill up an empty space with an intercooler (on the other hand, it is an empty space...), I'm not going to re-register the pickup with the new engine and all stuff that aren't obviously original parts will draw the attention to the engine compartment. And that I don't want...
One option is to remove the entire IC before going to the yearly check, I want to avoid the extra work though.

burn_your_money, did you mean something like this?

I could scoop air from the underside, and just have the fan be on wheen needed. I found a bunch of articles with fan based cooling. This one for example: http://autospeed.com/cms/title_Triggering-an-Intercooler-Fan/A_2478/article.html

That's

it. The picture shows a fan with radius close to the the radiator size, not a duct with a restriction on the exhaust side.

Maybe you can combine both features with either a duct coming from the front of the car added to that sort of equipment, either a diffuser added to the exhaust side of the marine compartment ventilator above.

That's far from a well done fan mount, but the article shows some very interesting figures.
What the heck, I'll make a duct to the fan and give it a try! :)

Indeed you can do way better. Show us some pics when you're done.

:) Hi Sven , on one of my conversions I fitted an intercooler with its own stat controlled fan from a ( If I remember rightly ) Mitsubishi shogun ( Izuzi trooper? ) the stat switched the fan through the old T25/T3 carb heater relay , this seemed to work really well with an air duct
