I know I know, another AAZ crank question...
« on: April 24, 2010, 06:01:58 am »
I tried to search for my problem but to no avail. All the info, and some video, was about crank pulley wobble but I have very noticeable vibration happening, perpendicular to the shaft. When you go to start it, sometimes it has an almost "hard click" noise that doesn't sound healthy. After it ran for a little while (5-10mins), at idle it seemed to bog down a little like it was starting to run low on fuel, which it is not. The pump is also sucking air. I replaced the clear lines and bypassed the factory fuel filter with my own and that helped a lot but it is still not 100% When running, the return was pure white there were that many bubbles coming out of it. The feed clears up 97% after it has ran for a minute, but as soon as it is shut down it all starts draining out and there is a huge void in the line, obviously the highest point, for about 4".

We have another engine laying around that I am going to try in it and see what it does. The clutch in mine is also in need of replacement so hopefully this other one will be in a better state.

I don't think there is, but, is there any difference between '94 and '95 Golfs? Owner told me it was a '95, registration says its a 94. Not a big deal, all the parts I ordered for a 95 fit so far.

There shouldn't be any major differences. AC or not and what turbo you have are the only things that come to mind. The pump mounting diameter may be different as well.

'94-95 is a cutover year for some stuff in Canada, but I think it's mainly on the gasser side.

'93-94 gasser Mk III's came with a 1.8L unlike their US counterparts.  They also have Mk II brakes instead of Mk III brakes, plus some suspension parts. '95 and up Mk III's have the 2.0L ABA and all the proper Mk III bits on the gasser side, but kept the Mk II brakes and things on the diesel.  After '96-97 when they switched from the AAZ to the TDI.  At that point all Mk III's have the same chassis parts whether they're diesel or not.

None of that should impact you though... Just take a look for extra electrical connectors on your pump that may or may not be there.  That's the most common change on the AAZ engines as time went on - they added more and more electrical gizmos to the pumps through the years.  If you have any differences post back here and we can help you sort out what's going on.
