will 1984 1.6TD IP work on a 1990 1.6TD
« on: April 14, 2010, 04:38:19 pm »
ok so i aquired a 1984 IP pump off an 1.6TD as my 1990 IP is no good.....
i have the pump all on and it seems to be putting fuel to all cylinders but the only problem is its smoking like crazy and when i pulled the fuel line off cylinder#4 no change in rpm but the motor runs like ***.....i will stall if you let of gas.......

the car has been siting for 8 months with a full tank of fuel......could the fuel be bad and not alowing #4 cylinder to fine correctly or the pump wont work with my 1990 1.6TD  (i also swaped out #4 injector with  a new one i had laying around and that had no afect.....when running it smokes like crazy!!

anyone have any thoughts as what should i do and would he fuel sitting for 8 months or so be enough to make it run like s#hit???

any comments would be appriciated!

I'd wager a bet that the pump is timed 180 out.

If you rotate the engine to TDC (camshaft) and remove the nut on the pump pulley you should be able to see that the keyway is pointing towards the head. If it's pointing towards the headlight it is 180 out.

The 84 pump should work just fine on the 90.

How many mm of advance did you time it to?

i wasnt the one who timed it but  will have it checked but will it still run if it 180 out????

when i seen he dial it read 20 or so...

does it sound fishy that when you take off 1-3 injectors the motor wants to die then you do # 4 and nothing
happends

does this sounds like a 180 out issue???

It is strange that #4 isn't responding. You said you swapped injectors on #4 though and it's fairly rare for one cylinder to be completely dead. It is a possibility though.

The car will definitely run 180 out. It will smoke, stall, have almost no power etc.

20 doesn't make much sense, if it was a friend ask him what it was timed to if you can.

ya it is weird about #4

like on the indicator there is zero then plus and minus eg.  10-20-30-40
and the nedle hit 20 and he was trying to move the pump back closer to zero.
said it should be ok.

if sitting for 8 months would there be a stuck valve on #4???

but it did smoke like crazy!!!!!  like and when i let off gas it dies   the motor was rebuilt and has 20 000 on it but some idiot over tighten the timing belt and runined the injection pump shaft bearing.....

but i will check the pin location of the shaft on the pully....

if there ARE stuck valves would thos maybe be cause ???

im lost here so i appriciae help
