IP Camplate: 180 degrees out?
« on: March 30, 2010, 07:26:20 pm »
Is there a way to verify whether an IP camplate is inverted -- short of pulling the pump apart, or bench testing with a drill to observe firing order?

My mTDI pump is distributing fuel to the injectors, but won't start the engine.  Other usual suspects such as glow plugs, air in lines, cranking speed, stop solenoid, etc. have been checked.

Pump base is an AAZ with TDI bits.  Fuel _is_ making it to all 4 injectors.

I think I just found a good diagnostic:

If you installed the camplate in the pump 180° out of time, then your pump will be 180° out of time and firing on 1 when it should fire on 4 and vise versa.  You could try timing it with the mark on the pulley pointing down when the cam lobes of #1 are up.

Is it smoking? Whenever I've had a pump apart the fuel screw never gets screwed in enough so it won't shoot enough fuel to fire up.

I usually screw it in extra far just to make sure and end up having to shut it off before it blows up.

If it's got lots of fuel coming out then what Andrew says will probably tell you whats up.
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

Loosened the line to #1 and confirmed that the camplate is 180 out: fuel spurts opposite where it should.  Now to figure out why my stop solenoid isn't getting 12v on its own...
