1.6 Turbos
« on: March 23, 2010, 11:17:23 pm »
OK... Bought a 1984 TD Rabbit.  However, my K24 is shot.  Too much slop in every direction, spewing oil faster than I can put it in the engine.

First thing?  Check ebay.  Wow.  Not many k24s out there, lots of others.  And lots of imitations, prothe being in front of the pack, but research tells me "NO!!! Don't go there!!!".

So, what is the group's recommendation for replacing the K24?  $1100 for a new one (if it can be found)?  I only paid $1200 for the whole car....

Really need some good, sound advice.  Hate to waste money, either on a cheap piece of junk or an overpriced old-tech replacement, unless it's the best way to go.  Don't know much yet about the different turbos, a list of them with comparisons would be GREAT (and unique... none on the net that I can find).  I do realize that bigger is not necessarily better, and I'm planning on racing... If anything, great mileage would be my goal.

Anyone care to try?

Thanks!!!

Alex

You could always have the turbo rebuilt, sounds like the oil seals have gone bad as well as the shaft play. If you choose this direction, keep in mind the impeller shaft and compressor assembly needs to be balanced once it has been taken apart, alot of shops dont have that ability. Look into G-Pop Shop, they have a very good reputation and are good to deal with, and reasonably priced.
If you are not dead set on keeping the k24, another option is going to a Garrett T3, I believe you will have to change the exhaust manifold to go this route, and if you buy used off the web, plan on a rebuild before using it.
Were you able to drive the car before the turbo started spewing oil? If you were and you were satisfied with the performance, I would just send it out to get rebuilt and save the hassle of getting an unknown from the web.
Hope this helps.
I'll try being nicer, if you try being smarter...

is that thing a huge turbo, or some sort of vacuum or air pump? is it capable of making boost? it would be cool if it did, that thing would have some massive flow. quarter of a billion CFM anyone?
