Motor Mounts

I'm not sure if my passenger side motor mount is bad on my 1991 N/A Jetta.  If the engine is running and I am at a stop, in neutral, I have a lot of vibration/rattling coming from in front of the pass seat.  Its not an IP too advanced rattle, its more like a, motor vibration being transfered to the body type rattle.

I am not sure about this because when the motor is under load it goes away.  Is this indicative of a bad mount?

Can anyone tell me what are the indications of a broke right rear(paasenger side) motor mount?

Well, I just ordered a rear mount from GAP.  Hopefully this will fix my problem.  I guess if the problem remains I will replace the front mount.

I've never seen one of the back mounts go bad in a Mk. II.
Look to see if the little heat shield piece on the exhaust manifold has rusted free or vibrated loose and is klinking around.

I have one of the passenger rear mounts go bad on my 85 GTI, under hard acceleration the two brackets will bang together.

nothing wrong with fresh mounts.

I already ordered the rear mount so I guess I will be changing it.

The other day I tried to rock the engine by hand by grabbing the V/C and pushing/pulling and nothing really seemed loose.  I will try to have someone look at the motor today while I begin to engage the clutch.  I can't really figure out what else it might be, but when I am in neutral or stepping on the clutch the noise and vibrations are pretty ugly.

Unfortunately the Bentley has nothing on this.

you cant really rock the engine with it still supported on the mounts. cause the engine and trans still weighs in at about 300 or so pounds. if you were to put a jack under the oil pan and jack it up just a slight amount, just to get the load off the mounts, then you should be able to rock it on the mounts.

and you can run it with it jacked up and see if the vibrating goes away

Since you are going to probably change the mount anyways, do this before  or once it's in. Loosen all the vertical mount bolts enough so they're loose- both engine mounts  and the transmission one. Then give  the engine a good rocking: it should align everything so the mounts are doing what they are supposed to. Have a look as you then tighten it all up. None of them should look out of center or forcing.

how hard is it to drive the bushings out of the mounts? im doing new mounts on a few different cars this year.

I replaced that mount and then did the front one next, it seemed to help the most.  Have a friend look at the front mount while you apply power fwd and reverse to see if it moves too much.

oh, i KNOW these mounts are SHOT. they need to be replaced bad, just wanted to know how hard it is to drive those bad boys out.
