HVAC light
« on: November 19, 2005, 05:10:07 am »
My light on my 91 Jetta TD went out that light up the HVAC controls. I got it all apart and the bulb is bad. The dealer wants $60 for the whole panel can't just get the bulb. I was able to just get the bulb and the small housing it is in out.  Anyone know of another source for a bulb? It’s not something serious but would be nice to have a light again. Also in the process of opening it up the clear plastic piece that the light illuminates broke on me. Do you think gluing it back together will effect the light at all?
Thanks,
Nick

How are your electronic fabricating skills?
I replaced several bulbs in my 97 with LED's. First time I used LED's and the appropriate resistor, next time I got lazy & used the 12V ones.
Mine are yellow & green. You can get blue, white, red, whatever you need, and never have to worry about replacing them again.

If you don't wanna go to that length, Radio Shack or other electronics parts places have tiny bulbs right down to 'grain of wheat' size.

I just remembered, years ago I replaced dash lights in my 87 Jetta with clear mini 12V Christmas bulbs. Worked excellent, I paid 17 cents for a five pack on sale
Had to clip the little bit off the end of the bulb to make them fit.

Oh...just make sure you don't use flashing ones...

I was thinking of using LED's I saw some at Radio Shack that looked like they would work. Thanks for the info. :)

The LED's I got were average and are tolerable, if a little dim.
You'll be happiest with LED's replacing bulbs if you get the brightest ones you can, like available here:
