Ip resealed...not pulling fuel?
« on: February 02, 2010, 12:43:11 pm »
Hello all,

i decided to try to reseal my leaking pump despite being an unusually stupid person.  so i got Lorelecs' excellent DVD to cook book my way through it.

the pump seemed to turn more easily when it was finished that i expected, the cold start was a little stiff and now it barely pumps fuel at all from the clear line.  ran the battery dead trying to get any fuel to the injectors.  stop solenoid is getting power and is clicking.

is this normal for a resealed pump, especially the turning more freely part?  maybe air in the body...i had refilled the pump from the out banjo before starting up.

now what i haven't mentioned is that some dirty fuel got sucked into the pump just before i took the pump off while i was doing a compression check (an icon for shooting oneself in the foot, reloading and shooting the other foot would be appropriate here) :-[

so during the teardown and reseal i tried to really clean and blow out any possibly plugged passages.

is it time to just toss the pump given the dirty, oily, watery fuel.

Any advice is appreciated (kicking my ass is deserved)  :-\

Well you can get the plunger/cam plate 180 degrees out pretty easy.
You say it turns over easy. Does it feel notchy? as in does it feel like you are turning over a small engine with resistance then easy resistance then easy...?

Just an update...and another question.

Well could only get two injectors to ever fuel but it seems like the feed pump was really weak and maybe i had messed up part of the internals.  The pump looks good anyways ;)

i had another pump so i got another seal kit and redid the seals on it and put it on the engine.  the pump is a 107A.  it pulled fuel strong and got the engine going.

The engine seemed to be way advanced, clattery and loud  (i thought it was a vellow dot pump so timed it to 0.45 and idled it like that for about 3 minutes) so i tuned it by ear to where it idled goody and didn't clatter at idle.

Now this engine is idling very smoothly but it is still acting like there is alot of advance; when cold it is making the "can of marbles" sound at high RPM's in 1st and 2nd but quiets down in 3rd and is alot quieter after it warms up.  It has alot more pickup, but i just checked the timing and it is at 0.29 in :o  How come it sounds like it will rattle apart at high rpm and has good power?  It seems like a contradiction cause i thought it would get sluggish with too much advance or if too retarded ???

i read something about dynamic advance in the pump and the "pressure pin" maybe being stuck...is this the regulator valve?  I am stumped...what to do? can i run it like this?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Well, it turns out that the pressure regulator/controller piston was frozen shut so i swapped out the bad one with a good one from the other resealed (failed resealed) pump.  i guess that is something that is adjusted during a pump calibration ???

Now it is running smooth without the valve clatter at high rpm.

Had to drive it about 100 miles the way it was cause i had to get to work, keeping the speed down below the "shaken can of marbles" rpm level most of the time...hope i didn't do any damage to the engine.

With the engine acting like it was way advanced it did have a bunch more power than i thought it could have.

Now to fix the new coolant leak and on to the next new problem   ;)
