Altitude Compensator Question
« on: January 29, 2010, 01:47:14 pm »
I am considering performing the governer mod and before I get started I have a few questions about the altitude compensator that is on my IP.

I guess my first question is, can I get rid of it?  Also, does it make doing the gov mod more difficult?  Do I need to do anything special when performing the mod if I can get rid of it?

I live at about 900 feet above sea level and right next to a mountain/hill that peaks out at 1300.  I cross the mountain frequently and I commute to an area about 500 feet above sea level.  If I can get rid of it will these changes in alt make any difference?  As I understand it it cuts fuel as you go up because the air is thinnner, right?  I can't see this much altitude killing my mileage...

I have a spare motor and the IP on that motor does not have the compensator.  I have been thinking of removing that IP, performing the mod and then installing that IP on the engine in the car.  I kind of don't want to go through the extra work (I'm pretty busy at home lately) but if it will be very beneficial to me to use this other IP, I will.

Thanks
Steve

Yes, but it looks like it is going to make the mod more difficult to perform.  I run WVO so I am not too concerned about MPG's.

It shouldn't have any effect on the gov mod

it does nothing for the difficulty of the mod. all you do with the top of the pump, is loosen it, take the gov assy out of the top of the pump, then take the gov assy out of the pump and put 2 nuts under the main spring. its the long one. if you dont do it right, everyone on the board is going to hunt you down, and cut your head off (not really). but do it right. there are lots of people that do it, and still end up shimming the intermediate (middle) spring. witch is not right. it wont run right or drive right.

Thanks.

I have read ALL of the gov mod posts, especially the new one by 8V-of-fury and I know which spring to shim.  I just hadn't heard much of the alt comp so I though I'd ask first.

Once it warms up a bit I'll tackle it.

Thanks to all
