freshen up gone bad, any advice?
« on: January 05, 2010, 01:45:45 pm »
Here's my story, ive been wrenching on my own ride for years, mostly vw, now going diesel. I have a 83 1.6 that smoked with no huevos so decided to get into. You'll see i made a number of mistakes along with bad advice to get where i am now, but am determined to get a good one running with your kind help. A mechanic friend of mine that i did more than enough carpentry work for was to help, but really didnt, we'll call him Earl. I know how to time and have the tools to do so ( looking for a injector tester and a exhaust manafold c-clamp expander).  Took out pistons-looked good, had been replaced before, one ring was bad. cylinders looked good-no ridge, earl said honing out would do it, first of many mistakes as we didnt mic cylinders. cleaned piston ring grooves well, earl eyed new diesel rings in holes for gap, but did not gauge. Replaced rod bearings. main bearings looked good. had the head leak tested, but not pressure tested as it looked really decent. it ran strong! but consumed oil, 2gal im afraid to report and smoked big time. Ported crank case breather tube to air as afraid of run on, but actually could and did with no visable input at intake manafold. compression test is 360,360,360,400  fully heated. anything else to test or do before tearing it down?  timing is at .86, injectors spray nicely and no drip, but don't know breaking pressure, injector pump seems bueno and am looking forward to up-grades as seen on this awsome sight. any questions or ideas? I get to computer once a day so will be 24 hrs between replies. thanks all!

Yeah, even without alt correction that doesn't feel like oil-burning compression numbers to my jaundiced eye... what colour is the smoke?  0.86mm could be quite retarded for your particular pump if it's been running since 1983.

Does the car have "huevos" now?! ;)

Another tack: sounds like you honed and installed new rings... how many miles ago, and did you do anything in particular to bed them in?

Third tack:  when the head was out was valve stem wobble checked?  Still has original valve stem seals?   Does it smoke more on start-up after being left overnight?

I've adjusted timing between .86 to .96mm- runs good either way, although it has become really difficult to start where intially it would start right up. Yes, cylinders where honed 400 mi ago, was told a dozen dogged accellerations in 4th gear would seat rings. No, valve stem wobble was not checked, nor where seals replaced. Could it use 2gal oil in 400mi! It smokes upon start, oil haze. How much oil vapor  should come out valve cover breather? How much pressure? Mine is alot of both, like a frieght train!

( looking for a injector tester and a exhaust manafold c-clamp expander).

Shadetree--

I'm afraid I've got nothing to offer for the main body of your post, but as I'm stuck at home with no transportation/netflix, awaiting a head gasket and studs and aimlessly browsing the web:

I've used the VW tool and also just used this reverse exhaust clamp method, at the suggestion of  a number of folks here:

I bought a 2 1/2" clamp and I think it works every bit as well as the legit tool.  Vomit your money elsewhere  ;D

2 gallons in 400 miles? Gulp...I would be rather cautious about revving it much (like when standing still) because it must be right on the verge of "runaway!"
The mask and the shot(s) are actually an IQ test. If you are wearing or circulating, you just failed the test. I can't feel sorry for you.

i thought my audi had considerable oil consumption @ a quart every 100 mi.
