Maximum RPM >_<
« on: January 09, 2010, 05:49:54 pm »
So I was wondering, what kind of RPM does a stock N/a pump on a 91 engine allow?

Foot to the floor in say 2nd gear, what is the maximum RPM your engine could achieve?

Would it allow itself to over rev to the point of danger to the engine?

What kind of RPM could one of these things sustain for a period of time?

Just curious. :)

thanks guys

You should be able to hit around 4800. Most likely it will be a little less because of wear in the pump.

I drove my old 1.6NA at redline for about an hour when my tranny crapped out in third gear. When I took it apart the cylinder walls were badly scored but I believe that was from previous incidents. My car sat for years and was occasionally fired up, which I think scored the walls. I did check compression when I got the car and it was around the 350-400 mark.

with the governor mod allowing you to reach higher RPM's what is the maximum suggested RPM of the engine?

Redline for an hour? WOW how did it feel during this event? screaming its little head off i bet. lol

I asked a vdub mechanic how fast I should be cruising since I was more used to big diesels, he said I could hold it to the floor all day and it'd be fine, then he added that I could hold it floored all day in neutral. :o Of course he was assuming the IP wasn't modded at all.....

I'd never do that.......

The bentley says something like 5350rpm floored in neutral.
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

so at 5350rpm is pretty much when stock fueling in neutral gives out.. I think it should be able to sustain that rpm for quite some time. I mean i have driven my 1.7 gasser at 5500rpm performing an "Italian tuneup" for like 30-45 seconds and it was fine. :P

I think i read somewhere the pump can fuel up to 7000rpm before it starts to skip on the cam plate and cannot provide anymore fuel. Would a stock engine be able to sustain 6500+?

like would the internals be able to hold up to that?

It was loud, very very loud :(

Engine took it like a champ though. Coolant temps were rock steady, no weird flashing lights. I only had the stock cluster so I don't have a whole lot of info. I was expecting my alternator or something to explode though (bad bearings). It was a nerve racking experience.

i know my 1.5 is rev happy. ive hit probably close to 8000 rpms missing a shift. grabbed 3rd, wanted fifth. and i was pretty much wound out in 4th. its not balanced or anything. im sure a 1.6 can do similar. ive even heard of a few different aaz's turning 7000 rpms. so im pretty sure they will safely turn way more rpms than you want to turn it.

IIRC Jake (fspgtd), missed a shift on his autocrosser and the valves floated letting the lifters come out of the bores or something. I think he revved high in 2nd and then hit 1st instead of 3rd gear.......I think it revved to 8-9k.

8000 rpm! was the engine ok after this happened? Lifters came out from there bores.. meaning the head was destroyed?

Well I was thinking more in the realm of 6000 maximum ever rpm for me.. But knowing it can handle 6500+ makes it a little better lol.

Can't really see the reason for ever taking a diesel that high.. makes its hp at 4800 anyway doesn't it? and torque at 2600?

I need a Dakota converter and an EGT gauge for the spring lol
