1.9aaz pump on 1.6td
« on: December 28, 2009, 11:59:03 am »
new member here but I have lurking for a while.   My dad is an avid poster though.   SO I was going to do a M-tdi swap into my sciroccoII  but price wise and fabricating wise right now with my abilities its just not practical to do.

I was thinking of putting a TD in  instead.  I have a block and a head from a 1.6td but I have a 1.9TD rebuilt pump.   The census from reading http://www.vwdiesel.net/forum/index.php?topic=18712.0 is that it might be a disadvantage???  The main reason for my switch is I have almost everything I need to do this.     I would like to do some performance mods and Im guessing I should read the 1.9td performance thread for that?

so my plan would be 1.6td head and block, 85 NA diesel tranny, 1.9AAZ pump, GTD injectors,  mk4 intercooler, probably 2.5 exhaust.   So how does this sound what problems am I looking at???

im pretty sure you can get way WAY more fuel out of a 1.6 pump in stock form. although, if you took a 1.6 pump and a 1.9 pump, and took the cam plate and some other parts out of the 1.9 pump and plant them in the 1.6 pump, then you would have something.

thats def something to think about I know there are alot of thread on making a pump such as that.   I guess I will keep my eye out for a 1.6td pump.

we do have a 1.6na motor that has an LDA on the pump.  my dad looked it up and found out it was a elevation compensator, he said it looks like it works the same way but the hose goes to atmoshpere where as the in a td it goes to boost pressure.  Could I possibly use this pump?

i would take that pump, and convert the alt comp to an LDA. there are threads covering the conversion. use the search function, it is your friend. and be sure that when you take the top off to do the conversion, do the governor mod, and grind the fuel limiter pin off so you get more fuel.

oh yes I have been searching like crazzzzy!!  found the gov mod and the LDA conversion which seems easy.  not to set on the gov mod yet I gotta read it over some more.  I think I will wait to do these till its running so I can tune the car..   I havent read anything on grinding off the fuel limiter pin though?  I am more on a hands on visual learner so I am sure it will make more sense when I open her up .   Thanks for all the help

its honestly pointless not to do the governor mod if you have the pump open.  the modification (2 tiny stainless nuts in my case) takes about 5 minutes to do once you have the pump top off. it raises the top end of your power band substantially. you start to see fuel cut at about 4000 rpms with a stock governor, but with a modified governor it will pull at least another 1000 rpms of useable power. and there is a steel pin sticking into the side of the pump that mechanically limits the amount of fuel it can put out. if you grind the head of that pin off, the pump will put out alot more fuel.
