That's an interesting question.  I have two identical 2001 Jettas and a G-Tech....might be able to do a bit of a comparison.

You do paint your pumps, don't you, for rust protection?  What kinda paint do you use that stands up?

No problem. That purple pump is painted with Tremclad from c-tire. Nothing fancy. It's been on the car maybe 9 months and it is holding up well so far.

I do like to paint them because of rust issues. Giles doesn't like to paint pumps because if the paint flakes off and gets in the pump or injectors it can reak havock on the system. I figure rust will do the same thing so I'm not putting myself at any greater risk and it looks better... even if it is purple

When we do paint pumps we typically use a quick dry enamel
