Not another N/A -> Turbo question, this one is a challeng
« on: October 17, 2005, 11:48:06 am »
Hello gents,
I've asked this question on lots of forums, but nobody seems to know their stuff!

Like many other I have read through all the "my 1.6 N/A needs more power" etc etc... but this doesn't help my little mission.

Basically, I want to know a similar sort of question, but concerning the 1.9 IDI's from mk3 golfs/passats.
I know the AAZ was a turbo version of this IDI mk3, but these are rarer than the N/A 1Y & AEY.

My question;
Do the 1Y & AEY have piston oil squirters; thus, would they be suitable for 'turboing'? Or are we at a similar state with the 1.6 engines whereby they have insufficient cooling/ heat resistant properties for reliable use with a turbo?

I would be attempting to use a turbo from a 1.6TD (engine code JR) on either the 1Y or AEY. I would also use all of the ancilliary turbo parts from this engine on the 1.9 block.

So what I need to know is the suitbility of the 1.9 engines for turboing- forget the old 1980's 1.6 N/A's- how about the 1990's 1.9 N/As!?!?!

Anybody with any knowledge/experience, Please help!

Alex

it's ok i dont have any problems with the engine witch also eat a mix of vegetebal oil,oh i put an intercooler from an older audi 80 1.6td ra engine.

non turbo 1.6 & 1.9's sell for peanuts you see, and this is why i'm asking the questions!

how would i find a 1.9 engine expert!?

thats because everyone swaps a trashed non-turbo for a turbo  }:)

I'm a reasonable 1.9 expert but I focus more on the turbo variants ;) I checked the VW-parts progam for more info:

http://morninglight.demon.nl/a3/oilsquirt.jpg

As you can see (oliesproeier = oilsquirter) there is no enginecode specification behind the part, if there is no specification it means that the part is the same on all engines stated under "Modelkeuze" Just like you see next to the part "antislingerschot" that is only applicable to the AAZ and 1Y.

So oilsquirters is a big + but I suggest you take a look at the injectionpump to check if there is a "mushroom" with a airline to the intakemanifold, that is for fuelenrichment under boost (althought the LDA pin under the lid of the mushroom is not enriching anything, you need the 1.6(G)TD pin to get some extra fuel) if not you could swap the top or the pump from your 1.6TD and moving some parts back that are in the top part (throttle mechanism, else you cannot give WOT)

But before you run to the salvageyard I suggest you do more research on the engine because there could be more things different and I don't give any guarantee other than good luck ;)

If the thing comes together nicely you can get something like this:

Slipping clutch in 3/4/5th gears when I hit the gas    (stock clutch can handle ~200Nm) my next mod is going to be a TDI flywheel w/ Sachs sportclutch capable of 390Nm, that should give me some headroom  :p

TD on 1Y engine
« Reply #4 on: October 18, 2005, 03:03:20 am »
I have carried out the 1Y > TD conversion with no problem. There is no gaurantee that your 1Y has the cooling jets, but mine did and there will be many other 1Y's that have them also. Off the top of my head, if your cylinder head number is 028 103 373 J, then its very likely it has TD head (plasma coated exhaust valves), pistons, block (with cooling jets) etc... just minus the turbo and pump. You will need to drill and tap the block M20 or somthing like that for the return pipe, or find a 1.6GTD sump with oil return (thats what I did).

Some had the cooling jets, some didnt have them. You will need to get a TD pump with boost enrichment and also, which isnt as important, have your injectors shimmed to 140 - 160 bar. I have mine set to 160, which should drop a bit after some running. Mk3 TDi intercooler and pipework will all bolt up no problem. I used a GT15 but the K03 and K14 are good too.

Check that head number, its behind injector 1 and let us know. If it is a TD short motor, its probably got more life than the same turbo'd motor of the same age, but they are durable either way.
