The best turbo timer is you. Wait 5 seconds before turning the engine off. Longer just wastes fuel.

5 seconds? thats all? doesnt seem like a turbo and manifold could cool down in 5 seconds. or are you just saying 5 seconds just to let it spin down?

When I had the turbo installed I waited until the egt gauge pegged at the bottom (250F) before shutting down, a little longer if I'd been running it real hard.

That method only measures the exhaust temp though so the turbo itself is probably really hot still.
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

if the exhaust coming out was 250*, the turbo probably wasnt that ridiculously hot.

Diesel exhaust is far cooler than g@ssers. 5 seconds is more than enough to make sure its cool and at its lowest speed.

While the gasses may be cooler after 5 seconds, I don't think that's long enough to cool a heat soaked turbo. Its the latent heat from your exhaust manifold & turbine housing that cokes the oil in the journal bearings after you shut down & the oil isn't flowing.

So... buy a house at the bottom of a hill & never buy a turbo'd car from someone who lives at the top of one!

i usually liked to idle my car for around 30 seconds to a minute usually. i never had a EGT gauge, so i figured i might as well be safe and idle it down good.
