1.5L pump on 1.6L
« on: December 07, 2009, 04:39:46 pm »
So I just bought a 1980 diesel Rabbit pickup. The lady I bought it from said it was a 1.5 but in fact it is a 1.6. I confirmed this when I looked at the casting on the back of the block "1.6L."

So I replaced the headgasket and timing belt and other misc. parts. I was planning on turboing it so I have been trying to find as much information as I can and have found something that makes me wonder.

First off when I was timing it I looked in my Bentley an saw that there was pump timing for a "yellow dot" pump which meant nothing to me because I am after all new to this whole Volkswagen thing.  :-[ . But I timed it and got it all running and everything has been good. I had a leak in the injector pump so I pulled the top cover off to fix it. While I was at it I decided to do the gov. mod. I had read all the gov. mod threads, and when I tore into my pump what I found inside looked nothing like what I had seen.

Today I started looking to see if I could find out what pump I had to make sure I didn't have a yellow dot or something that I had missed. Come to find out the pump is a 1.5L yellow dot pump from what I have read. I assume that when the 1.6L block was swapped in they decided to use the 1.5L pump.

My concern is that when I turbo it I will not be able to run enough fuel. I have the pump turned all the way up as it is. I had the smoke screw turned up more yesterday and the idle hung, so I turned it back down.

Here are some pictures.

From what i have read the yellow dot pump has just an "A" at the end of the part number

This is a picture of where the "yellow dot" might have been

I know my post might now make much sense but I am just trying to figure out if in fact I have a 1.5L pump. If I do I will just find a turbo pump and call it good. I know one of my friends has one and I have one in my shop but it is on a turbo motor that I don't really want to tear apart.

Although on oregon fuel injections website it says that it is a

Rebuilt Injection Pump Volkswagen Rabbit, Rabbit Pickup, Jetta 1.6L 1977, 1978, 1979 VW # 068130107A, 0460494005

I never thought of it that way but I was mainly concerned about the injector pump.

I know for sure it is a 1.6 block and head. Its is a 12mm block and head.

107A's can be either yellow dot pumps or non yellow dot

if you time a yellow dot pump as a non yellow dot pump (0.033 - 0.0.39 mm) it will hardly idle so it is pretty easy to tell which pump you have which that way (assuming the pump was running before you retimed it).

i run a 107a on a 12mm mechanical block and it does pretty well but the guy at Oregon fuel injection in Medford thought it may tend to run little lean for a 1.6 liter.

It was running before I tore into it to replace the HG.

I timed the pump to 1.00mm and it seems to be fine.

I timed it using the specs from the Bentley

Early Chassis:  (1977-1983)

1.5l non-turbo 1977-1980                                        0.88 +/- 0.05 mm

1.5l non-turbo 1980 with yellow dot                         1.15 +/- 0.05 mm

1.6l non-turbo  1981, 1982, and 1983 pickup            0.88 +/- 0.05 mm

1.6l non-turbo  1983 Rabbit and Jetta                        0.95 +/- 0.05 mm

1.6l non-turbo  1983 Vanagon                                  0.90 +/- 0.05 mm

1.6l tubo diesel (1982-1983)                                       1.00 +/- 0.05 mm

I did not time it as a yellow pump because at that time I didn't know what that meant. I have a feeling I will be changing the pump so I guess this is a non-issue now..
