best piston ???

my little brother sucked a bunch of much through his engine in his samurai , and killed it . ( one of the piston skirts broke )
anyways it's a 1.6 td .
he asked me to ask you guys , if money was no object , who makes the best piston for the 1.6 .
i'm asking for real world experience here .

why not go with the OEM? If he isn't racing it, why spend the extra $$$? With the extra $$ he can buy a snorkel

i should add , the engine is running around 200 hp ... errr was running .

I don't think anyone is making high performance pistons for these motors.
the OEM ones seem to be the most resilient, and close to the most expensive, if you can afford them the OEM ones seem to be a good bet.

I want to see a printout of the dyno run for the 1.6TD that was running 200hp.

what a bunch of doubters ..... geez ......
first off the stock tranny wouldn't hold up to the horse power , he went through 2 of them .
( i've been told that they are good up to 130 - 150 hp )
installed a tranny out of a side kick , which is much heavier , 2 months later it's is making noise and getting really really hot and difficult to shift .
swapped it out for a toyota tranny ( from behind a 22r ) no problems .
basicly the thing it toyota running gear , none of the stock samurai stuff was holding up . he has 2 sets of tires , a set of 31's and a set of 33's , and he it trying to con a set of 34's off of me .
the engine before if blew up was running gtd nozzles , popping around 2600 psi .
fuel cone ground to the limit of the fuel pins travel , used the softer green spring on the diaphram
heavily ported head don in a way to enhance the swirl effect of the stepped intake port .
intake and exhaust manifolds both heavily ported .
he went through many turbo's , but it seems the best results so far have been with a k24 with the compressor side set tighter to the wheel , and heavy porting to the exhaust side . ( he did have 2 of them snap the shafts off of them )
through a audi intercooler it was running easly 35- 40 psi .
i turned the fueling down so it didn't go much over 35 psi in an attempt to preserve the life of various parts .
full 3 inch exhaust .
he had rebuilt the pump ( it was peeing diesel everywhere ) , i printed out a bunch of " how too's "
and to my surprise he did them all .
the timing avance mod where the pump case is ground away to allow for more timing.
govenor mod ( which i had to redo for him because the engine was hanging ) .
i think he may have adjusted the interfuel pressure higher too .
there is also a lift pump feeding the pump around 18 psi .
the engine would defuel starting around 6500 rpm
i had also modifyed the oiling system for him , knife edged the crank and installed a windage tray and scrapers .
the last turbo he had on it was a s200 ( switzer i believe ) compressor side with the k24 exhaust side . it seemed to be fairly well , but was on there for less than 2 weeks before it died .
if that engine was not making close to 200 hp ....... i don't know what will ....
and NO i'm not going out to have it dyno'd to satify a bunch of curiosity when a simple question was asked .....
" what is the best piston made for the 1.6 td ".

stepped intake port?
I have only see those in TDI heads, all the 1.6 IDI ones I have seen are a regular port, just like a gassers.
what head is he running?

I haven't ever built a "race" 1.6L...
The best pistons I have used for gas engines for race applications were JE. Serious money, but took 17.5:1 comp in a gas engine. Normally it would have been 15:1 but we figured wrong on the HG thickness and no matter what we did with timing and fuel we couldn't get it to stop detonating. We figured out and fixed the HG issue and looked at the pistons and they were fine. I think we were at 1,300.00 for 8 pistons they were custom made for us. I don't know if they have a diesel division or would make you a piston, but if price is no object and they would do it I wouldn't be scared of them at all. As VW tends to overengineer everything I bet OEM would do well for most people, and maybe you could contact an OEM maker and see if they would customized some just for you.

From what i have read there really isn't too many diesel performance pistons.. stock pistons were pretty much designed to withstand whatever this engine could produce. Even 200hp

Hey Andrew, my buddies 1.5 N/a went through a couple trannies.. what would you ballpark? 140...150hp?

I am fine with the claim of that...alot of people here are have done less and made the claim. I think the pumps on these make the most difference, but with everything you have done including the pump I bet it did run great. When you get it back together it would be neat to see a dyno, but not nessesary of course. With that list of mods and fueling if you are not at 200 you are probably close. Great job on this engine and good luck finding pistons

JE says explicitly on their web site that they don't/won't make diesel pistons. Even if they did, I don't think they would outlast the OEM pistons since they don't have the reinforced ring lands. I think OEM pistons (specifically Kolbenschmidt or Mahle) are your best bet. Have them thermal coated to help reject heat if you like. AFAIK, the OEM ones will be cast, but I've seen cast pistons used successfully in gas applications up to 200HP/L. Besides, it sound like whatever pistons you were using originally were doing fine until the mud came along.
