Newbie Help......
« on: November 07, 2009, 11:11:19 am »
Hi guys, been on here a while, but up till now just been reading topics and taking it all in (well, trying too anyway! ;D)

So today I decided to undertake the boost pin/star wheel mod and add a bit of boost to my GTD (SB) engined MK2 van.

I followed all of the instructions carefully to give me max fuelling, then adjusted my KKK K14 to give me just over 1bar of boost (about 15psi)

The problem I now have is that I get an awful 'surging' of boost....It feels like the turbo comes on boost with a loud whooshing noise, then a funny barking type sound, and then boost again.......almost like it's overboosting then venting the excess boost to atmosphere, then boosting again???? ???

Does anyone have any idea what my problem is??? And if it's boost related, is there an overboost mod, or does the K14 simply not handle 1bar ???

Cheers in advance! ;)

Jimmy

might just be the upper limits of that turbo. ive heard from alot of people that right around 18 psi is the safe limit for a K14. i push 22 out of my K24, and 28 out of my VNT 17.

Have a look on your inlet manifold

Need to block off the overboost return

Or fit an AAZ manifold lower half

I jubilee clipped a 1/2"-3/8" drive adapter in the hose but you wouldnt want that firing into the turbo inlet

I had something similar with a jammed wastegate in the turbo. If this happens about once a second, then that is the item number one dumping the boost. It does this at about 12 psi or even less, and it isn't very subtle about doing it. >:(

The 'overboost' valve is pretty easy to block off.  If you crank the screw in the end of it down you can increase its popping pressure a bit, but it's just a PITA basically.  VW removed 'em from later intake manifolds so that's one route...

I just cut off a chunk of a broom handle and stuffed it in the hose.  Problem solved...

i drilled a hole in mine and put a bolt and rubber grommet inside it. and i made sure to use stuff big enough that the engine could not ingest the bolt no matter how hard it tried. and the nut is on the outside, so worst case scenario, it comes apart, i have no boost, and i instantly notice my bolt gone.
