Those who may have seen some of my earlier posts, I have a wretched loud tapping from the engine, yup, it is half crank speed, but is too heavy for tappets, lifters, cam followers or whatever you call them over there. More than a tick, not quite a knock, but a hefty tap or clack. It sounds deeper than the cam area, and best guess is top middle of the engine. Gas pedal makes very almost nearly no difference, killing the engine key makes no difference, The clack might be quietest when the engine is on full boost, but that might just be because everything else is louder.

I changed the tappets with another set, no difference,

So, have any of you ever had wrist pin trouble with the 1.6 turbodiesels? ???

Is it possible that it is a diesel knock from a bad injector?  I had that once and changed out one of the injectors and the problem was solved.

I have a noise so bad that the MOT guy was reluctant to test it! I signed a release from liability form and the engine passed the smoke test with 0.3%!
I have towed a caravan 1400 miles with it and no problems.
I suspect it could either be a bearing , or even valves kissing  pistons due to  a head skim.

I have a sound recording I made with my camera in the summer.
Try making a recording and posting it.

My Dad's golf gasser does that, when it first started the noise we changed the hydro lifters and rod bearings with absolutly no difference.
We decided it must be the wrist pin makin' noise. Haven't messed with it in probly 4-5 years and it's still running strong, a bit noisy though ::)
'82 Rabbit, I put on a euro vnt-15, 2.25" DP, 2.5" exhaust, the result.....it whistled.

I removed the turbo, made a toilet bowl 2.5" DP, the result....it was deafening. Now it has a homemade muffler up front and a thrush in the rear, the result.....less loud.

cam lifters were changed, no difference, camshaft measured and miked, unworn and perfect. No change with fuel shut off or injector pipe loosend.

How does one post sound files on here so as you can enjoy it in all its clacking glory? ;D

Would it being quietest on boost be a clue? 10psi would be about 78lb load on a piston ( assuming that at least 10psi will be in the exhaust manifold to drive the turbine) this 10psi will be present behind both inlet and exhaust valves, would that be enough to keep the piston shoved against the rod as the rod changes direction at TDC. Acceleration figures by someone else please!  8)

It turns out I didn't know how to post audio either ::)
This is a somewhat echo-y early recording of my engine. I have more recent one's somewhere ;D

Funeral March Music.............................
Dumm Dumm Der Dumm Der Der Dumm Der Dumm Der Dum Der etc.
Well, I now don't think it was a tappet, I have explained to the ladyfriend what that funny red light and buzzing noise means, (how far?) 20 miles, hmm. Took about a gallon to get anything on the dipstick, yup, abosobloodylutely zero oil in it. Runs on three now, with scary orchestra of destroyed bearing knocks, so tis dead, full of oil a couple of days ago, so just curious as to the most likely post mortem mechanism of death. My bet is on piston break up, or maybe turbo oil seal failure, but there was no runaway. Don't panic as the engine is definately dead, I'm just curious as to how it ate all the oil so as to commit suicide ???

Why do you think engine is dead? I drove mine for 2 miles with no water, towing a caravan, and it was fine. If it starts since the oil error, then it should be fine. Discover which cylinder is not running correctly, and try changing the injector. When my car ran low on oil, the brake vacuum pump lost vacuum. These engines put up with a lot of abuse. [I know it looks like I abuse  my car, but I don't honest ;D ]

It starts, astonising, but it is seriously shagged. It sounds like two dozen suits of armour falling down a stone staircase, clouds of oil smoke pour out the exhaust. Utterly Butterly Shagged.
 ;D Car for sale then!
