1.6 td questions (head studs, metal HG, clutch)
« on: November 14, 2009, 11:24:48 am »
i wanna upgrade my 1.6td head gasket to a metal one from the AAZ, is this just i direct replacement? theres also a lot of talk on here about ARP head studs, what are the benefits of using these over standard head bolts? also is it true that the ARP studs for the 1.6td are the same as those for the cosworth engine like these ones?... http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ARP-Cosworth-YB-Head-Stud-And-Nut-Kit_W0QQitemZ280406831366QQcmdZViewItemQQimsxq20091008?IMSfp=TL091008147001r4360

also is there any oe VW clutches that are an up grade to the standard one found on the 1.6td?

thanks for any help ;D

The metal headgasket is a direct fit on hydraulic engines (86+). The main advantage of ARP studs is that they are reusable. Yes they are the cosworth studs.

I've heard of people using a 1.8 8v clutch disc with a 16v pressure plate with good results. You can't use the 16V clutch because it's for large spline 16v trannies.

just another thing, if i upgrade to the AAZ hg are the thicknesses the same (is a 2 hole fiber gasket the same thickness as a 2 hole metal hg?), and where do i look to see how many holes my head gasket is?

1) Not exactly... the FAQ links to a thread with all the numbers.

2) The notches/holes are visible at the front of the gasket near the coolant flange, but in reality the best approach is to measure piston protrusion once you get the head off...far too many folks just throw a 3-notch gasket and hope for the best. ;)

unfortunately i don't have the time to be waiting until the head is off before finding out which head gasket i need. the car is my daily driver and i'll only have a weekend to get it sorted and my local motor factors can only supply parts like this through the week as they have to order them in so i'll have to go off the holes in the gasket that is already on it.

Have a look on tdiclub about the arp bolts, there is a few instances of failures. Worth looking at the arl head bolts (oem off pd150), might work out cheaper and more reliable

isn't the 8v clutch disc 10mm smaller than the 16v pressure plate though? would this cause a problem?
